Polish officials said Tuesday they had arrested a radical nationalist who planned to detonate a vehicle loaded with 4.4 tons of explosives outside parliament, possibly when the president and prime minister were in the building.?

Prosecutors said the man, a scientist who works for a university in the southern city of Krakow, had assembled a small arsenal of explosive material, guns and remote-controlled detonators and was trying to recruit others to help him.?

A video recording taken from the suspect showed what prosecutors said was a test explosion he conducted, leaving a large crater in the ground.?

'Anti-Semitic,' 'xenophobic' motives
Polish television, citing sources close to the investigation, said the suspect planned to copy methods used by Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in bomb and gun attacks in Norway last year and said he was driven by far-right views.?

"The suspect does not belong to a political group or party. He claims that he was acting on nationalistic, anti-Semitic and xenophobic motives," prosecutor Piotr Krason told a news conference.?

"He carried out reconnaissance in the neighborhood of the Sejm (parliament). This building was to be the target of the attack. He collected explosives and materials for detonation," Krason said.?

(AP) ? A group of extremist Islamist factions in Syria has rejected the country's new opposition coalition, saying in a video statement they have formed an "Islamic state" in the embattled city of Aleppo to underline their rejection of the Western-backed bloc.

The statement was a reaction to the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces, formed Nov. 11 in Qatar to unify groups trying to topple the regime of President Bashar Assad. The coalition is led by a popular Muslim cleric and is seen as a way to counter the growing influence of Islamic extremists in the 20-month old revolt that has claimed more than 36,000 lives.

A militant website released the video late Sunday. In it, an unknown representative for the Islamist fighters spoke beneath a black Islamic battle flag at the end of a long table seating some 20 men. Reading from a statement, he said the group rejects the new opposition body, and declared the northern city of Aleppo, a major front where many radical groups have been fighting since the summer, an "Islamic state."

"We are the representatives of the fighting formations in Aleppo and we declare our rejection of the conspiratorial project, the so-called national alliance," the statement said. "We have unanimously agreed to urgently establish an Islamic state and to reject any foreign project." The authenticity of the video could not be independently confirmed, but the website it was released on carries al-Qaida and other militant statements.

The Syrian uprising started as peaceful protests in March 2011. It quickly morphed into a war that has deepened sectarian divisions in the country. Many of those trying to depose Assad are Sunni Muslims, while the regime is dominated by Alawites, followers of a Shiite offshoot sect.

Syria's political opposition has struggled to prove its relevance amid the civil war under a leadership largely made up of academics and exiled politicians. With its relaunch as a new organization earlier this month, it has taken a different tack by choosing Mouaz al-Khatib as its head. The 52-year-old cleric-turned-activist is respected by groups from across the political spectrum and has preached sectarian unity.

Speaking in in Cairo, where the 13-group alliance is now based, Al-Khatib told reporters that the Coalition will consider the concerns of Syrian factions who have not joined the new umbrella group.

"We will listen to our brothers who have not joined this alliance," al-Khatib said after a meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr. "We will keep in contact with them for more cooperation in the interest of the Syrian people," al-Khatib said.

So far, France has gone the furthest in recognizing the Coalition, declaring the Doha-formed alliance as the representative of the Syrian people and accepting one of its members as the group's ambassador to Paris on Saturday.

The United States and Italy have both recognized its status as a representative, but stopped short of conferring formal diplomatic recognition. Turkey last week recognized it as "the legitimate representative" of the Syrian people.

Many Syrians, particularly those in the capital Damascus where fighting and demonstrations have been relatively light, fear the involvement of Islamic extremists in the civil war. Jabhat al-Nusra has claimed responsibility for a number of devastating bombings in the capital and other cities, targeting state security institutions and military intelligence branches there.

Also on Monday, a Kurdish group has clashed with rebel units in the city of Ras al-Ayn, a Turkish official said. The infighting among rebel units comes just days after opposition fighters ousted Assad's troops from the strategic city in northeastern al-Hasaka province along the border with Turkey.

At least 24 Syrians were injured in the clashes and were brought across the border into the Turkish town of Ceylanpinar, according to an official in the Ceylanpinar mayor's office. The official said two of the injured men later died.

The official said the clashes erupted after a group of Kurds marched through Ras al-Ayn trying to hoist a flag of a Syrian Kurdish party.

He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules that bar civil servants from speaking to reporters without prior authorization.

An Associated Press video journalist in Ceylanpinar heard gunfire and occasional shelling coming from the oil-rich city that at is predominantly Kurdish.

While the Assad regime has been isolated internationally for cracking down on dissent, Iran, Russia and China have backed Damascus during the conflict.

Tehran has started building a $10 billion natural gas pipeline to Syria as part of efforts to boost Iran's energy sector that has been battered by international sanctions.

Iran's semi-official Fars news agency said on Monday that the 1,500-kilometer (900-mile) pipeline will pass through Iraq before reaching Syria.

Iran began construction of the first phase of the project involving a 225-kilometer (140-mile) stretch at an estimated cost of $3 billion. The Fars report said the entire project is to be completed in the second half of 2013. The deal was signed between Iran, Iraq and Syria last July.

Optogenetics illuminates pathways of motivation through brain

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Whether you are an apple tree or an antelope, survival depends on using your energy efficiently. In a difficult or dangerous situation, the key question is whether exerting effort ? sending out roots in search of nutrients in a drought or running at top speed from a predator ? will be worth the energy.

In a paper to be published online Nov. 18 in Nature, Karl Deisseroth, MD, PhD, a professor of bioengineering and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University, and postdoctoral scholar Melissa Warden, PhD, describe how they have isolated the neurons that carry these split-second decisions to act from the higher brain to the brain stem. In doing so, they have provided insight into the causes of severe brain disorders such as depression.

In organisms as complex as humans, the neural mechanisms that help answer the question, "Is it worth my effort?" can fail, leading to debilitating mental illnesses. Major depressive disorder, for instance, which affects nearly 20 percent of people at some point in life, is correlated with underperformance in the parts of the brain involved in motivation. But researchers have struggled to work out the exact cause and effect.

"It's challenging because we do not have a fundamental understanding of the circuitry that controls this sort of behavioral pattern selection. We don't understand what the brain is doing wrong when these behaviors become dysfunctional, or even what the brain is supposed to be doing when things are working right," Deisseroth said. "This is the level of the mystery we face in this field."

Clinicians refer to this slowing down of motivation in depressed patients as "psychomotor retardation." According to Deisseroth, who is also a practicing psychiatrist, patients may experience this symptom mentally, finding it hard to envision the positive results of an action, or, he said, they may feel physically heavy, like their limbs just do not want to move.

"This is one of the most debilitating aspects of depression, and motivation to take action is something that we can model in animals. That's the exciting opportunity for us as researchers," said Deisseroth, who also holds the D.H. Chen Professorship.

Light coercion

Psychiatrists, Deisseroth included, believe the will to act may be born in the prefrontal cortex ? the foremost part of the brain that helps plan and coordinate action. It then zips through the brain as a series of electrical signals, passing from neuron to neuron along countless branching pathways until it reaches the nerves that directly implement movement. Until this study, however, it was not clear which of these pathways might control the willingness to meet challenges, or the anticipation that action might be worthwhile in a difficult situation.

To isolate these pathways relevant to depression, Deisseroth's team needed to stimulate specific brain cells in rodents and observe changes in their behavior. They used optogenetics, a technique Deisseroth developed at Stanford in 2005, which has since revolutionized the fields of bioengineering and neuroscience.

The secret is as old as green algae. These single-celled organisms produce a protein called channelrhodopsin that makes them sensitive to sunlight. Borrowing and engineering the gene for this protein, Deisseroth has been able to create neurons that respond to light delivered from fiber-optic cables. He can turn the neurons on and off by sending bursts of light to activate different areas of the brain and then observe the effects on behavior.

Working backward

Surprisingly, the researchers found that simply stimulating the prefrontal cortices of rodents didn't motivate them to try any harder in a laboratory challenge. It turns out that motivation is not as simple as stimulating a region of the brain. Instead of one switch in the prefrontal cortex that turns motivation on, multiple switches work in concert. Some neurons excite motivated activity and others inhibit it. Broadly stimulating the executive part of the brain will not generate a simple effect on behavior.

"It's one step more subtle" said Deisseroth, "but this is something that optogenetics was very well-suited to resolve."

An optogenetic method called projection targeting allowed the scientists to work backward from the brain stem and find the exact pathway from neurons in the prefrontal cortex that signal motivation.

The researchers first introduced their light-sensitive protein into cells in the prefrontal cortex. The light sensitivity then spread out like the branches of a tree through all the outgoing connections and eventually made its way to the brain stem, making those regions light sensitive, too.

Then, illuminating the newly light-sensitive regions of the brain stem thought to control motivational movement, Deisseroth and Warden watched the behavioral effects as a subgroup of neurons in the prefrontal cortex that sent connections to brain stem were activated. They could see not only which cells are possibly involved in motivation, but the way motivation moves from one brain region to another.

Mapping motivation

The researchers suspected that one part of the brain stem in particular, the dorsal raphe nucleus, might be crucial to behaviors that control effort. This cluster of cells is a production hub for serotonin ? a chemical messenger that changes the firing behavior of other cells. Serotonin is associated with mood modulation; many antidepressant drugs, for instance, may act by increasing serotonin concentration in the brain.

When the pathway between the prefrontal cortex and the dorsal raphe nucleus was stimulated, rodents facing a challenge in the lab showed an immediate and dramatic surge in motivation.

Curiously, however, when the rodents were relaxing in their home environment, the same stimulation had no effect. The pathway was not merely linked to any action, or to agitation; it was, more specifically, helping to "set the effort that the organism was willing to put forth to meet a challenge," Deisseroth said.

Researchers were also able to produce the opposite effect ? reduced effort in response to challenge ? by stimulating prefrontal neurons that project to the lateral habenula, a region perched atop the brain stem that is thought to play a role in depression. When this region was getting signals driven optogenetically from the prefrontal cortex, rodents put forward less effort.

Larger puzzles

These findings are part of a larger puzzle that Deisseroth and his team have pieced together by using optogenetics to model human behavior in animal subjects. The work has already helped clinicians and researchers to better understand what is going on in a patient's brain.

Connecting depressive symptoms with brain pathways may be helpful in the development of drugs, but according to Deisseroth, the most important part of this research is its insight into how motivation works in both depressed and healthy people.

He has observed that this insight alone can be helpful to those dealing with mental illness and seeking an explanation for troubling symptoms that feel deeply personal. For those patients, he said, simply knowing that a biological reality underlies their experience can be a motivational force in itself.

Bond Writers Neal Purvis & Robert Wade Confirm That 'Skyfall' Is ...

james bond daniel craig Bond Writers Neal Purvis & Robert Wade Confirm That Skyfall Is Their Last 007 Adventure

As ?Skyfall? becomes the most successful Bond film in its 23 film history, British screenwriting duo Neal Purvis and Robert Wade took part in a master class at the fourth Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF) to lift the lid on writing for one of the iconic film franchises of all time.

?When we were originally asked to come in to meet the Bond people, we weren?t expecting to be walking straight into a meeting with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson? said Neal Purvis, describing the moment they first started collaborating with franchise?s producers. ?Usually there are many other layers of people that stop you getting to the head honchos and we certainly were not expecting to be kept around for 15 years?

?When we met Eon Productions, only two of our screenplays had been made into films. It just seemed preposterous to us that they wouldn?t have other writers on the project? added Robert Wade. ?But they?d read a few of our other scripts and liked our sense of character and action. If there?s action without a story or a character angle, then it?s just boring.?

Meeting at 22, the pair who has been writing together for 28 years wrote their first script during the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

?The British Film industry in 1984 was not in a great shape. We?d write pop video?s to make extra money,? said Purvis. ?The tragedy is we were getting paid in the 80?s what screenwriters are still being paid today?

Since then, they?ve written a total of 41 scripts, with ten being made into films. Wade said ?We were told don?t expect anymore than one in ten of your screen plays to be made. She was right. We thought yes, that?s probably true, however that won?t apply to us.?

?Now were on our 41st?script and have have ten films made. You wouldn?t write each day if you didn?t believer that your scripts were going to be made,? added Purvis.

Addressing the production delays this latest outing, the duo shed light on how important this additional time was ?We benefited from the delays as we hadn?t gotten the story right. The film would not have been made without them,? explained Wade.

?The third act wasn?t right. We gave ourselves a few weeks to come up with a new concept, which ultimately became a metaphor for our journey working on these movies ? our own ?Skyfall?? added Purvis.

When pushed on if the partners were intending to write more Bond films Wade said ?We?re very happy to have done five Bond movies, I think we?ve gotten it to a good place. I know that John Logan and Sam Mendes have come up with a plot for another one, which takes the pressure off because these films take up a lot of time.?

Purvis added, ?We were going to stop with ?Quantum of Solace,? but it?s good to go out on a high with ?Skyfall.??

Asked about other projects outside of Bond, Wade divulged ?We did get hired to write a script about Elton John stealing 11 of the best footballers in the world, to play against a team of robots on another planet. ?That was our second paid job,? explained Purvis.

And what?s the only thing as a bond writer you can?t do? ?Time Travel? says Purvis. ?And killing him off? said Wade, before adding ?although we have been tempted?

Chemists at New York University have discovered a family of anti-freeze molecules that prevent ice formation when water temperatures drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Their findings, which are reported in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), may lead to new methods for improving food storage and industrial products.

"The growth and presence of ice can be damaging to everything from our vehicles to food to human tissue, so learning how to control this process would be remarkably beneficial," says co-author Kent Kirshenbaum, an associate professor in NYU's Department of Chemistry. "Our findings reveal how molecules ward off the freezing process and give new insights into how we might apply these principles elsewhere."

A common misperception is that water necessarily freezes when temperatures reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit or zero degrees Celsius. Not so, scientists point out.

"Nature has its own anti-freeze molecules," explains co-author Michael Ward, chair of NYU's Department of Chemistry. "We simply don't have the details on how they work."

To explore this topic, the researchers created artificial, simplified versions of protein molecules that, in nature, inhibit or delay freezing. These molecules were placed in microscopic droplets of water, and ice formation was monitored by video microscopy and X-ray analysis. The experiments allowed the researchers to determine which critical chemical features were required to stymie ice crystallization.

The experimental results showed that there are two ways the molecules adopt anti-freeze behavior. One, they work to reduce the temperature at which ice begins to form, and, two, once ice does begin to form, they interact in ways that slow down its accumulation.

The researchers then investigated the molecules' structural features that might explain these capabilities. Their observations showed molecules act as "ice crystallization regulators." Ice has a crystal structure, and the anti-freeze molecules may associate with these crystal surfaces in ways that inhibit the growth of these crystals, thus delaying or halting the freezing process.

Thousands protest in Ireland to liberalize abortion laws

The recent death of a woman reportedly denied an abortion has sparked outrage. In Dublin, thousands of marchers demanded liberalization of Ireland's tough ? and, some say, unclear ? anti-abortion laws.?

By Jason Walsh,?Correspondent / November 17, 2012

Several thousand abortion rights protesters march through central Dublin on Saturday, demanding that Ireland's government ensures that abortions can be performed to save a woman's life. Ireland has been shocked by the death of Savita Halappanavar, a 31-year-old Indian dentist who died of blood poisoning after being denied an abortion in a Dublin hospital last month.

The street protest, the second the city has seen in three days, was called in response to the Oct. 28 death in a Galway hospital of Savita Halappanavar, who was pregnant and reported to the hospital complaining of severe pain. She was reportedly refused an abortion, and died after complications during a miscarriage. Her widower, Praveen, says they was told this was because Ireland was "a Catholic country."

The death has sparked outrage across Ireland ? and the world. One headline in an Indian newspaper's online edition accused Ireland of murdering Ms. Halappanavar.

Think you know Europe? Take our geography quiz.

March organizers claim a turnout of 20,000, but Irish police gave a figure of 6,000. Either way, the march was unusually large by Irish standards, wending its war from the Garden of Remembrance, a national independence ?memorial, to Ireland's parliament, D?Il ?ireann, just over a mile away.

"The mood was somber and angry and determined," says Wendy Lyon, a feminist activist and trainee attorney who attended the demonstration.?"The sense was there has to be a turning point. That things can't be allowed to go on without change. Enough is enough, basically."

Ms. Lyon says Halappanavar's death has resulted in a sea-change in Irish opinion, politicizing the previously apolitical: "I think the people really have shifted on it. I've spoken to people who were hesitant before but said something had to be done."

Two inquiries are ongoing into Halappanavar's death, one by the hospital and one by Ireland's Health Service Executive, the arm's-length body that administers Ireland's health system.

Coming as it did as the government ponders the recommendations of an "expert group" on abortion, Halappanavar's death has reignited an already simmering war of words about the morality ? and legality ? of abortion.

Ireland outlaws abortion under an 1861 statute, but a 1992 Supreme Court judgment demanded the country legislate to allow for abortions when a woman's life is threatened by pregnancy. Successive governments have not brought any legislation forward, but a 2010 European Court of Human Rights judgment demanded Ireland clarify the status of abortion in Irish law.

Currently, terminations are permitted only if the intention is to save the life of the pregnant woman rather than end the pregnancy. Doctors have complained there is a lack of clarity over when they can or cannot perform terminations, either by induced labor or by dilation and evacuation, a method used to deal with miscarriages but also a form of surgical abortion.

Speaking on Friday, Prime Minister Enda Kenny rejected the idea there was a connection between Halappanavar's death and the country's stance on abortion, calling it a "tragic coincidence."

Mr. Kenny is on the record as an opponent of abortion, and his conservative Fine Gael party is virtually uniformly anti-abortion, but his coalition partners in the Labor party are predominantly in favor of at least limited access to abortion.

Smaller events were held across Ireland today, including in Galway, where 60 members of the Indian community gathered outside Galway University Hospital. Candlelight vigils were also held in other towns and cities, including an assembly of 1,000 people in Galway.

Texans-Bears all about?offenses

Spotlight will shine on D's, but team that figures it out on O will win

By Greg Bedard

When the Bears and Texans meet on Sunday Night Football in one of the top matchups so far this season ? both teams are 7-1 ? the defenses for each team will be spotlighted on the national stage.

But the better offense will likely determine the winner.

Each team has a top 10 defense, with the Texans ranked third in yards allowed, and the Bears second in scoring defense.

Each team relies on its rushing attack ? Houston is eighth, Chicago 11th ? but is middling through the air.

Texans quarterback Matt Schaub ranks seventh in the league with a 96.8 rating and has found a high level of comfort in the play- and boot-action scheme used by coach Gary Kubiak.

But Schaub lacks in weapons at his disposal, especially with tight end Owen Daniels questionable with a back injury. Daniels leads the team with five touchdowns, and is second with 37 receptions behind receiver Andre Johnson (42). Receiver Kevin Walter and fullback James Casey, who each have 21 catches, are the only other Texans with more than 12 receptions.

The Bears are similar. Quarterback Jay Cutler has a rating of 85.3 throwing predominantly to receiver Brandon Marshall. His 59 receptions account for 41 percent of the team?s total, and the nearest non-running back is Earl Bennett (16). Rookie Alshon Jeffery, who is fourth on the team with 14 catches, is doubtful with a hand injury.

Each standout defense is going to look to shut down the opponent?s main weapon, which is easy to figure out ? Marshall for the Bears and Johnson for the Texans.

Whichever team runs the ball better and finds other contributors in the passing game will likely emerge with a victory on Sunday night.

A look at the three keys for each team:

  • Texans
Stop Matt Forte: The Bears? starting running back is one of the league?s top talents both on the ground (5.0 average) and in the air (20 receptions). Chicago has serious offensive line issues protecting quarterback Jay Cutler, so Houston has to expect that the Bears will try to stay balanced with Forte. If the Texans can neutralize the Bears? running game, that will force them to drop Cutler back to pass more than they want to. That would play right into the Texans? hands. Inside linebackers Tim Dobbins and Bradie James will be key to filling the run gaps properly.
  • Shut down Brandon Marshall: Marshall is the Bears? passing offense, and it?s easy to see why with his 6-4, 230-pound frame. The Texans have one of the league?s better cornerbacks in Johnathan Joseph, but at 5-11 and 190 pounds, he can?t handle Marshall by himself. Expect the Texans to double Marshall every chance they get, especially if tight end Owen Daniels isn?t able to play.
  • Handle the onslaught: The Bears have one of the deepest defensive lines in the league ? ends Julius Peppers and Israel Idonije and tackle Henry Melton are the stars, but there are eight really good players in the group ? and they generate a lot of movement up front, which has contributed to the 17 interceptions the Bears have produced. The Texans can counter with a very good offensive line, specifically left tackle Duane Brown and center Chris Myers. Bears linebackers Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs and Nick Roach do not possess the swiftest of feet, so the Texans should find some success with their stretch runs in the zone-blocking scheme if the line can handle the point of attack. Running the ball at least moderately well will keep Schaub from feeling that he has to carry the attack, which he has not shown the capability of doing. The last time the Texans had a showdown against a top team from the NFC North, the Packers in Week 6, Schaub completed just 60 percent of his passes and had season highs with two interceptions and three sacks. The Bears have the best ball-hawking defense in the league. The Texans can?t afford to give up big plays.
  • Bears
Find the protection/balance: The Bears have allowed 28 sacks this season, and Jay Cutler has been dropped 14 times in the past three games. Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is one of the best at designing pressure packages, and between sensational end J.J. Watt and linebackers Brooks Reed, Connor Barwin and Whitney Mercilus, the Bears? porous line is going to be under siege. Chicago offensive coordinator Mike Tice has to know this, so he will likely try to keep as many blockers in as possible. Will the Bears be able to make enough plays with the run and pass to move the ball? That will be a huge question.
  • Stop Arian Foster: The Texans aren?t running the ball quite as well as they did last season, but they?re still in the top 10 in every meaningful category, and the offense is predicated on the run game. Most of the passes are based off some sort of play action. If the running game isn?t a threat, then the defense will no longer respect the fakes. The left side of the Bears line ? Idonije at end and Melton at tackle ? are standouts against the run. But Stephen Paea and Julius Peppers on the other side are not as good. That side will have to be better, as will weakside backer Nick Roach. The Bears could also use a huge game from middle linebacker Brian Urlacher and strong tackling from the cornerbacks.
  • Find another option besides Marshall: Phillips has already said that the Texans are going to double Marshall on every snap. While that could be a bluff, Phillips doesn?t usually play games like that. And he should double Marshall ? he?s the only real receiving threat the Bears have. That means that receivers Devin Hester and Earl Bennett, and tight end Kellen Davis are going to have to find ways to make plays. If the Texans are successful at slowing down Forte and Marshall, it?s hard to see how the Bears move the ball. Somebody is going to have to play big. Who will it be?

Allergies from Pollen Projected to Intensify with Climate Change

allergies pollen increase climate change

Spring and summer allergy sufferers might already have noticed a slight increase in days spent sneezing each year. And new research suggests that allergies triggered by pollen are set to increase?in both duration and severity?with climate change.

The seasonal scourge ragweed has already been expanding its range in North America, thanks in large part to warming temperatures. ?Climate change will increase pollen production considerably in the near future,? Leonard Bielory, a visiting professor at Rutgers University and lead researcher on the new project, said in a prepared statement. In fact, plant-based allergens are expected to nearly double by the year 2040, according to research presented this week at the annual scientific meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).

The researchers are studying plants grown in chambers that mimic conditions (including temperature, precipitation and carbon dioxide levels) similar to those projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in coming decades.

Bielory?s findings suggest that while pollen counts (the average number of pollen particles in a cubic yard of air over the course of a day) in the northeastern U.S. averaged at about 8,455 in 2000, they will surpass 11,412 by 2020 and will top 18,285 by 2040?possibly pushing as high as 21,735. In the past 25 years, for example, ragweed pollen has increased from Texas all the way up to Canada.

Not only are the average pollen counts likely to increase dramatically, but the allergy season is also set to start?and reach peak levels?much earlier in the year. In 2000, for example, pollen production began around April 15, but in 2020 it is expected to begin around March 27. Peak pollen production (increasing from 1,684 in 2000 to at least 1,844 in 2020) is likely to move from May 2 in 2000 to April 9 in 2020. And the warm season is not simply shifting its dates, but in most of North America, it is expanding by starting earlier and ending later, bringing more pollen for its duration.

Allergies are affecting an increasing segment of the population. Although there is currently no cure for seasonal allergies?and many people cope simply by using over-the-counter treatments to reduce symptoms?allergy shots can improve the body?s tolerance for the allergen. Allergies occur when the body?s immune system overreacts to a substance, such as tree pollen, grass, mold, dust mites, animal dander or a food. So shots work by slowly exposing the body to small amounts of the culprit substance. The drawback is that shots generally need to be given over time, and the tolerance generally does not last indefinitely. Bielroy recommends that, ?allergy sufferers begin long-term treatment, such as immunotherapy, now? to decrease their reaction to increasing pollen levels to come.

Being Friends With Your Ex - The Bad News

Being Friends With Your Ex - The Bad News

No matter how your relationship came to an end, the hardest part of any split is often considering the final disposition - the moment in time when you actually have to say goodbye where each of you goes their separate ways. This ultimately leads to a lot of former couples forming a type of friendship in an effort to avoid the pain of being alone. Unfortunately, these friendships are full of potential landmines - and both parties are usually left feeling more hurt than they would have otherwise.

No matter how amicable your breakup was, a friendship with your ex is not all sunshine and rainbows. While at first the benefits outweigh the drawbacks by an impressively high ratio, the reality cannot be kept at bay forever. Although the two of you hang out often, talk almost like you used to and share a common bond and understanding, your relationship doesn't exist anymore. You broke up, and you can't gloss over the fact of the matter with a pseudo relationship in place forever.

What was your connection with your ex before you started dating? Were you friends? Did you hang out in the same circles? Were you acquaintances? A friendship with an ex becomes more viable when it is simply a continuation of a pre-existing bond prior to your dating relationship. It minimizes the damage that can potentially be caused by breaking away completely and gives you an excuse to stick around - even if you may know better.

Just because being friends with your ex is ultimately a bad idea for both of you, it isn't all bad right off the bat. Good moments certainly are possible. Maybe in the long run you start feeling closer to your ex than ever. It finally seems that you were able to put the past behind you, and that things are really starting to work out the way you always dreamed. What could possibly put a kink in the plan now?

No friendship is free from flaws entirely. People disagree all the times, and friendships ebb and flow as both individuals grow and change as they encounter different challenges individually as well as together. When you're friends with an ex, these problems are often compounded exponentially. No matter what side of the breakup you were on, you're going to have to deal with these issues head-on, or kiss your friendship goodbye before it even begins.

If you're the person who ultimately ended your relationship with your ex, you have to understand that your ex is still trying to deal with lingering feelings that didn't end just because the relationship did. Ultimately, they're looking for the opportunity to come in and save the day - by reinstating your romantic relationship with or without your blessing. If things don't seem quite cohesive in the way of a typical friendship, chances are good that those feelings are most likely the culprit, and they're also not simply going to go away if you ignore them for long enough.

If your ex is the one that called things off, however, you already know what's really going on. That deer in the headlights look isn't fooling anyone. You know that you want to win your ex back at almost all costs, and you're just biding your time until a golden opportunity magically shows up at your door. You think that a friendship is simply an avenue to achieve your overall goal, and if your ex is denying their own feelings that denial will eventually wear off.

No matter how amiable your breakup was, one person inevitably felt more hurt than the other. Maybe it was due to the fact that they felt their opinions didn't count towards the overall disposition of things, or maybe it's because they never wanted the breakup at all. Regardless of the thought-process behind the scenes, things that heavy can't stay hidden forever. It will ultimately lead to a lot of built up emotion on one or both sides, and it's going to be hard to move past that kind of negativity long-term.

Focus on the Ultimate Prize

If you're starting to recognize the reality behind your fa?ade of a friendship, then the biggest hurdle is already behind you. Often admitting your feelings is harder than putting them into practice in reality. You need to take some time away from the friendship and your hopes for the situation and really focus on what you're feeling.

Since you're on the fence with the whole friendship tactic, you may want to take the plunge and realize that it's simply not the correct course of action if you're looking for a real chance at a renewed relationship. Some action will need to be taken on your part, and being friends is not the way to make it a reality.

Are You Friends Already?

If your breakup led to a gradual shift into friendship that doesn't have to mean that your golden opportunity has already passed you by. The time to take definitive action is gradually slipping through your fingers, however, which is why you absolutely need to step up to the plate and do something about it - before you realize that it's simply too late.

The good news is that there are certain things you can do now that may give you an edge in the long run. First of all you need to move away from the friend role that you may have unwillingly filled. That means backing off for a little while and seriously considering your options. From there, a conversation is in the cards - and it's not going to be an easy conversation to have.

The fact of the matter is that you owe yourself some honesty right now, and you owe it to your ex as well - even if that honesty is not something they necessarily want to hear. Be honest with the doubts that you're having about staying friends. More importantly, be honest about how you really feel. Although they may be resistant at first, they'll come to appreciate your honesty, and that's going to give you a definite advantage throughout the process.

What To Do Next

Being friends with your ex is only a good idea if you are not interested in them romantically and have moved on. However, if you want to get back together there are a few things that you have to do first. Avoiding these break up mistakes is crucial if you want to be successful. Most people have no idea that they are doing anything wrong and this is dangerous. You also should be on the look out for signs your ex loves you. Only then can you really gauge how they feel and what your chances are.

What then? ? Part 1 | ECC | Youth Worker Update

By Dale Lusk

Mission trips are often a major part of the student development plan in many churches. I think that is great! I?m all for it.

Unfortunately, many of us as youth pastors might be missing out on what probably is the most important student development element of a mission trip. All of the preparation meetings are super important. The team building, ministry preparation, language learning, prayer, cultural sensitivity training, and more, are necessary and make the trip worthwhile for the hosts.

Of course the cross-cultural relationships built during the trip, as well as the serving, the learning, allowing God to utilize your student?s skills, putting others before yourself, etc. All are so important to the encouragement of the local ministries and enhancement of what they are doing in their communities.

And yes, the debriefing times during a trip are important, as students are wrestling with all of the input they receive each day during a trip that sometimes blows their minds. Then we often return home from a mission trip and quickly move on to the next thing thereby missing an incredible opportunity.

I remember the spring youth mission trips I ran when I was young. We spent months preparing for the trip, hours debriefing during the trip, but as soon as we got home all of my energy went into the next things I had planned (graduation events, summer planning, camps, etc.). This got me thinking ? I totally missed out on a great opportunity.

With that being said: ?What do you think?

Do we really think students (or anyone, for that matter) are truly able to grasp what they learned on a mission trip DURING the mission trip. Wouldn?t it make more sense to work through those issues more in depth AFTER the trip?

Filmmaker Oliver Stone has never been shy about putting his personal stamp on a project. Showtime's upcoming Untold History of the United States, co-written and narrated by Mr. Stone, is no exception. Begins Nov.12.

Human footsteps

In Mankind: The Story of All of Us, the History Channel launches an ambitious six-part, 12-hour miniseries, examining the key moments that enabled mankind to survive everything from the Ice Age to modern times. Narrated by Josh Brolin, the series, launching Nov. 13 at 9 p.m., traces the invention of fire, community building, farming, written language, and industry. Future episodes look at the sacking of Rome, the Industrial Age, space exploration, and the human body.

FOGERTY & CO.

If ever pop music was created to sound awesome in a car, it was CCR's. Short, snappy, rocking singles like "Proud Mary," "Down on the Corner," and "Bad Moon Rising" blasted from radios coast to coast in the late 1960s and early '70s. And you know what? Their music holds up and still rocks, big time. The Ultimate Creedence Clearwater Revival is a comprehensive compilation on three CDs.
