Asteroid dust could fight climate change on Earth

To combat global warming, scientists in Scotland now suggest an out-of-this-world solution ? a giant dust cloud in space, blasted off an asteroid, which would act like a sunshade for Earth.

The world is warming and the climate is changing. Although many want to prevent these shifts by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases that trap heat from the sun, some controversially suggest deliberating manipulating the planet's climate with large-scale engineering projects, commonly called geoengineering.

Instead of altering the climate by targeting either the oceans or the atmosphere, some researchers have suggested geoengineering projects that would affect the entire planet from space. For instance, projects that reduced the amount of solar radiation Earth receives by 1.7 percent could offset the effects of a global increase in temperature of 3.6 degrees F (2 degrees C). The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has noted climate models suggest average global temperatures will likely rise by 2 to 11.5 degrees F (1.1 to 6.4 degrees C) by the end of this century.

"A 1.7 percent reduction is very small and will hardly be noticeable on Earth," said researcher Russell Bewick, a space scientist at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. "People sometimes get the idea of giant screens blocking the entire sun. This is not the case ... as [the device] is constantly between the sun and the Earth, it acts merely as a very light shade or filter."

Shading Earth

One proposal to shade the Earth from the sun would place giant mirrors in space. The main problem with this concept is the immense cost and effort needed either to build and launch such reflectors or to construct them in outer space ? the current cost to launch an object into low Earth orbit runs into thousands of dollars per pound. Another would use blankets of dust to blot out the sun, just as clouds do for Earth. These offer the virtue of simplicity compared with mirrors, but run the risk of getting dispersed over time by solar radiation and the gravitational pull of the sun, moon and planets. [Top 10 Craziest Environmental Ideas]

Now instead of having a dust cloud floating by itself in space, researchers suggest an asteroid could essentially gravitationally anchor a dust cloud in space to block sunlight and cool the Earth.

"I would like to make it clear that I would never suggest geoengineering in place of reducing our carbon emissions," Bewick told LiveScience. Instead, he said, "We can buy time to find a lasting solution to combat Earth?s climate change. The dust cloud is not a permanent cure, but it could offset the effects of climate change for a given time to allow slow-acting measures like carbon capture to take effect."

The idea would be to place an asteroid at Lagrange point L1, a site where the gravitational pull of the sun and the Earth cancel out. This point is about four times the distance from the Earth to the moon.

The researchers suggest outfitting a near-Earth asteroid with a "mass driver," a device consisting of electromagnets that would hurl asteroid-derived matter away from the giant rock. The mass driver could serve both as a rocket to push the asteroid to the L1 point and as an engine to spew out sun-shielding dust. [5 Reasons to Care About Asteroids]

The researchers calculate that the largest near-Earth asteroid, 1036 Ganymed, could maintain a dust cloud large enough to block out 6.58 percent of the solar radiation that would normally reach Earth, more than enough to combat any current global warming trends. Such a cloud would be about 11 million-billion pounds (5 million-billion kilograms) in mass and about 1,600 miles (2,600 kilometers) wide.

Ganymed has a mass of about 286 million-billion lbs. (130 million-billion kg). An asteroid of this size might make one think of disaster movies, such as "Armageddon"; however, "rather than destroying the Earth, it could be used to help mankind," Bewick said.

Asteroid dust challenges

The main challenge of this proposal would be pushing an asteroid the size of Ganymed to the sun-Earth L1 point.

"The company Planetary Resources recently announced their intention to mine asteroids," Bewick said. "The study that they base their plans on reckons that it will be possible to capture an asteroid with a mass of 500,000 kilograms (1.1 million lbs.) by 2025. Comparing this to the mass of Ganymed makes the task of capturing it seem unfeasible, at least in everything except the very far term. However, smaller asteroids could be moved and clustered at the first Lagrange point."

Safety is another concern.

"A very large asteroid is a potential threat to Earth, and therefore great care and testing would be required in the implementation of this scenario," Bewick said. "Due to this, the political challenges would probably match the scale of the engineering challenge. Even for the capture of much smaller asteroids, there will likely be reservations from all areas of society, though the risks would be much less."

Also, there's no way to fully test this dust cloud on a large scale to verify its effectiveness before implementing it, "something that is common to all geoengineering schemes," Bewick said. "On the global scale, it is not possible to test because the test would essentially be the real thing, except probably in a diluted form. Climate modeling can be performed, but without some large-scale testing, the results from these models cannot be fully verified."

Still, if geoengineers did use asteroids to generate clouds, they could drastically reduce how much dust the projects spew out "should any catastrophic climate response be observed," Bewick said, "with the cloud dispersing naturally over time."

The scientists will detail their findings in the Nov. 12 issue of the journal Advances in Space Research.

Teens and technology | Dayton Children's Blog

The popularization of the automobile in the 1920s was not universally welcomed. Many raised questions about the safety of this new invention and their concerns were valid. There are about 1.2 million fatalities world-wide associated with car accidents, and another 50 million people injured and billions of dollars in damages. Even so, few are willing to give up the convenience of the auto in spite of these significant costs.

As with many things in life, we try to minimize the risks to enjoy the benefits.

We?re in that same situation today in dealing with the dilemmas presented by kids and technology. Our teens are technologically connected with 68 percent of them sending text messages daily, averaging somewhere between 60 and 100 texts every day. Over half of our teens visit a social networking site daily. Over 80 percent of teens have their own cell phone, and two-thirds have a device that allows them to connect to the Internet.

That means that 67 percent of our kids can visit virtually any website without our guidance or supervision. We are fearful.? We don?t want our children in internet relationships with strangers, addicted to pornography, victims of cyber bullying or sexting, and spending excessive times with screens rather than interacting with real people.

There is a digital abyss between parents and kids when it comes to technology. Kids experience this world very differently than their parents, playing down the risks while applauding the many advantages. While most adults go to the internet for information, kids seek relationships in their digital worlds.

Our kids love technology, and report that the benefits outweigh any risks. For the 75 percent of teens who are involved with social media, they report that use of networks such as Facebook helps them be more confident, outgoing, sympathetic to others, and feel better about themselves. They overwhelmingly report that it has helped their relationship with friends and family members other than adults. About an equal number report it has hurt and helped their relationships with their parents.

Teens are aware of the risks of technology, with 20 percent to 41 percent of them reporting that they feel ?addicted? to their cell phone, iPad, or social networking site, and 28 percent of them feel their parents are ?addicted? to those same devices.

We?ll give up neither our cars nor our computers and so we?ll have to help our children deal with both, in spite of the risks. This means doing two things.

  • Educate. Engage your children in ongoing conversations about technology. Learn about Facebook and texting, and talk with your kids about articles like this.
  • Supervise. You?ve got to match the degree of supervision with the needs of your child. As with driving a car, apply the simple principle that supervision decreases as responsible behavior increases.

(AP) ? Bombs striking Shiite neighborhoods, security forces and other targets across Iraq killed at least 26 people Sunday, officials said, in the latest instance of coordinated violence to take a sectarian bent and undermine confidence in the beleaguered government.

The deadliest attack came in the town of Taji, a former al-Qaida stronghold just north of Baghdad, where three explosive-rigged cars went off within minutes of each other. Police said eight people died and 28 were injured in the back-to-back blasts that began around 7:15 a.m.

In all, at least 94 people were wounded in the wave of attacks that stretched from the restive but oil-rich city of Kirkuk in Iraq's north to the southern Shiite town of Kut.

Spokesmen for the government and Baghdad's military command could not immediately be reached for comment, and no one claimed responsibility for the violence immediately.

Car bombs however are a hallmark of al-Qaida in Iraq. The Sunni militant network has vowed to take back areas of the country, like Taji, from which it was pushed before U.S. troops withdrew last December.

Shiite lawmaker Hakim al-Zamili, a member of parliament's security and defense committee, said the attacks were a sign al-Qaida "is still in business." He said a deadly weekend prison break in Tikrit in which many al-Qaida-linked convicts escaped, likely boosted the terror network's morale and spurred Sunday's assault.

"Al-Qaida leaders have no intention of leaving this country or letting Iraqis live in peace," al-Zamili said. "Thus, we should expect more attacks in the near future. The situation in Iraq is still unstable ... and repetition of such attacks shows that our security forces are still unqualified to deal with the terrorists," he added.

Shortly after the Taji attacks, police said a suicide bomber set off his explosives-packed car in the Shiite neighborhood of Shula in northwest Baghdad. One person was killed and seven wounded. Police could not immediately identify the target.

"So many people were hurt. A leg of a person was amputated," lamented Shula resident Naeem Frieh. "What have those innocent people done to deserve this?"

And in Baghdad's bustling Karradah neighborhood, a parked car laden with explosives went off next to a police patrol, killing a police officer and a civilian, other officials said. Eight other people were injured. The blast was followed minutes later by another parked car bomb as people gathered, killing three civilians and injuring 12 others, they added. Secondary bomb blasts targeting those coming to help the wounded are a common insurgent tactic.

An Associated Press cameraman was knocked to the ground in the second explosion and an AP photographer was slightly injured.

Elsewhere in the country, another suicide bomber drove a minibus into a security checkpoint in Kut, located 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of Baghdad. Three police officers were killed and five wounded, Maj. Gen. Hussein Abdul-Hadi Mahbob said.

And in Iraq's north, another policeman was killed when security forces were trying to defuse a car bomb parked on the main highway between the cities of Kirkuk and Tuz Khormato, said Kirkuk police chief Brig. Gen. Sarhad Qadir. A second policeman was wounded in the blast, Qadir said. Kirkuk is about 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad.

In mid-morning, another parked car bomb went off next to a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims in the town of Madain, killing three Iraqis and injuring 11 others including seven Iranians, another police officer and health official said. Madain is a mainly Sunni area located 20 kilometers (12 miles) southeast of Baghdad.

In the town of Balad Ruz, 75 kilometers (45 miles) northeast of Baghdad, a parked car bomb targeted a passing police patrol, killing two policemen and injuring seven others, a police officer and health official said. And in the nearby town of Khan Bani Saad, 15 kilometers (nine miles) northeast of Baghdad, yet another parked car bomb exploded near a market and killed one civilian and injured nine others, they added.

Two Iraqi soldiers were killed in the town of Tarmiyah, 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Baghdad, when their patrol hit a roadside bomb, another police officer and health official said. Six other people, including four civilians were wounded.

Health officials in Taji, Tarmiyah and Baghdad confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to release information.

Earlier this summer, the Iraqi wing of al-Qaida, also called the Islamic State of Iraq, launched a campaign dubbed "Breaking the Walls," which aimed at retaking strongholds from which it was driven by the American military. At its peak, al-Qaida in Iraq brutalized its victims with publicized beheadings, suicide bombings and roadside bombs that targeted the Shiite government, the U.S. military and Iraqi civilians.

In an attempt to goad Shiite militias to respond, Al-Qaida bombed the revered al-Askari Shiite shrine in Samarra in 2006 ? an attack that launched Iraq's descent into more than three years of sectarian fighting. But the Iraqi wing of al-Qaida was shunned by the worldwide terror network's central leadership, which chided it for killing civilians.

The insurgency made a series of other missteps ? imposing overly strict Islamic discipline and alienating tribal leaders ? that undercut its support in Iraq's Sunni communities and helped lead to the widespread defection of fighters to groups allied with the U.S. As a result, the flow of funding, arms and fighters slowed to a trickle, and al-Qaida in Iraq has struggled to command much power.

Violence has dropped since the height of Iraq's bloodshed a few years ago, but Iraqi forces have failed to stop the attacks that continue to claim lives almost daily.

What's on Mars? Evidence of water (+video)

On Thursday, NASA's Mars Curiosity rover identified what are believed to be rocks moved by water that once flowed on the Red Planet. Curiosity's further exploration is hoped to determine whether Mars was once inhabited by microorganisms.?

NASA's?Mars rover, Curiosity, dispatched to learn if the most Earth-like planet in the solar system was suitable for microbial life, has found clear evidence its landing site was once awash in water, a key ingredient for life, scientists said Thursday.

Curiosity, a roving chemistry laboratory the size of a small car, touched down on Aug. 6 inside a giant impact basin near the planet's equator. The primary target for the two-year mission is a three-mile (five-km) -high mound of layered rock rising from the floor of Gale Crater.

Scientists suspect the mound, known as Mount Sharp, is the remains of sediment that once completely filled the crater. Analysis of a slab of rock located between the crater's north rim and the base of Mount Sharp indicate a fast-moving stream of water once flowed there.

Images taken by Curiosity and released on Thursday show rounded stones cemented into the rock, which rises like a piece of jack-hammered sidewalk from the planet's surface.

The stones inside the rock are too big to have been moved by wind, Curiosity scientist?Rebecca Williams, with the Planetary Science Institute in?Tucson,?Arizona, told reporters on a conference call.

"The consensus of the science team is that these are water-transported gravel in a vigorous stream," she said.

The rock is believed to be from the floor of an ancient stream which was once between ankle- and knee-deep.

The analysis is based on telephoto images taken by the rover, which is en route to a patch of land named Glenelg where three different types of rock intersect.

Scientists have not yet decided if the slab of rock warrants a chemical analysis, or if there are better targets for Curiosity to look for the building blocks of life and the minerals to preserve it.

"The question about habitability goes beyond the simple observation of water on Mars," said lead scientist John Grotzinger at the?California Institute of Technology.

"Certainly flowing water is a place where microorganisms could have lived. This particular kind of rock may or may not be a good place to preserve those components that we associate with a habitable environment," he said.

The $2.5 billion?Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity mission?is NASA's first astrobiology mission since the 1970s-era Viking probes.

Pet Insurance Agency Pets Best Insurance Names Dr. Tony Poutous ...

Pets Best Insurance, a leading U.S. pet insurance agency, announces Dr.Tony Poutous of Virginia Beach, Va. based Pet Care Veterinary Hospital as its second-quarter winner in the 2012 My Vet?s the Best contest.

Boise, Idaho? Dr. Tony Poutous has been selected as the most recent winner of the Pets Best Insurance My Vet?s the Best Contest, after receiving an endearing nomination from client Karen Calabro and receiving more than 3,000 clicks in an online vote amongst himself and five other nominated veterinarians from around the country.

The other finalists were Dr. Holly Brophy of Zion, Illinois, Dr. Irvin Ingram of Phoenix, Arizona, Dr. Richard Chu of San Francisco, California, Dr. Kathy Joseph of Vandalia, Ohio and Dr. Luminita Sarbu of Renton, Washington.

Karen Calabro?s nomination was selected because she said Dr. Poutous genuinely cares about all animals and he?s quick to trade in his free time to work with clients after hours.

?Dr. Poutous is the world?s greatest when it comes to compassion, knowledge, communication and genuine concern regarding all animals here on earth,? Calabro said. ?This man is an absolute treasure.?
Dr. Poutous said he was honored to win the title of ?best vet? and that just being nominated was an honor in itself.

?I really would like to thank all our clients for being so dedicated and to Karen for nominating me in the first place,? he said. ?I want to give my thanks and appreciation to the other doctors who were nominated as well.?

Dr. Poutous said he?s not sure exactly how he will use the $1,000 he?s won, but he thinks he has a pretty good idea.

?Our office does run an angel fund that we use to help defray the cost for pets that are in need,? he said. ?I suspect I will donate that money to the angel fund so that way it can be used to help the most animals and the most people.?

The pet health insurance agency first launched My Vet?s the Best in 2011 and expanded it in 2012 to include even larger prizes. The contest began on January 1, 2012 and continues throughout the year.

President and Founder Dr. Jack Stephens said Pets Best Insurance created the My Vet?s the Best contest to recognize stellar veterinarians across the nation who have exceeded their clients? expectations in every way possible.

?As a veterinarian, I know what it?s like to want to help an animal that can?t receive treatment because of the cost associated with veterinary care. That?s why this contest awards deserving veterinarians with $1,000 provide care for animals in need,? Dr. Stephens said.

Dr. Poutous said he thinks pet insurance can be very helpful because it can help clients afford veterinary care they might otherwise not be able to.

?It?s something you hope you don?t have to use, but I think it?s a very valuable tool,? Dr. Poutous said of pet insurance. ?When my clients ask me about it, I say it?s certainly worth looking into. It?s nice to have the security there? especially when animals get sick or when there?s an accident.?

Pet owners who think their veterinarians have gone above and beyond for their pet are asked to submit their nominations through a form on the Pets Best Insurance Facebook page and website. Each quarter, an internal panel selects six finalists from all received nominations. The six veterinarians and their client-submitted stories are then posted to Facebook for public voting.

Each quarter, the pet owner that has the story with the most votes will receive a $200 cash prize and the winning veterinarian will receive $1,000 for the treatment of animals in need. One grand prize winner will also be selected in 2013. The annual grand prize winner will receive airfare, hotel accommodations and registration for two to the 2013 Western Veterinary Conference, a leading continuing education conference for veterinarians. The 2012 My Vet?s the Best contest will recognize a total of four winning pet owners and their veterinarians throughout the year.

More information about the contest, nomination process and rules can be found at: www.petsbest.com/vetpromo.

Researchers investigate aggression among kindergartners

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Not all aggressive children are aggressive for the same reasons, according to Penn State researchers, who found that some kindergartners who are aggressive show low verbal abilities while others are more easily physiologically aroused. The findings suggest that different types of treatments may be needed to help kids with different underlying causes for problem behavior.

"Aggressive responses to being frustrated are a normal part of early childhood, but children are increasingly expected to manage their emotions and control their behavior when they enter school," said Lisa Gatzke-Kopp, assistant professor of human development and family studies. "Kids who don't do this well, who hit their classmates when they are frustrated or cause other types of disturbances in the classroom, are at especially high risk for long-term consequences including delinquency, violence, dropping out of school, abusing substances and even suicide. Research tells us that the earlier we can intervene, the better the chances of getting these children back on track."

Gatzke-Kopp and her colleagues, who include Mark Greenberg, professor of human development and family studies and of psychology, asked each of the kindergarten teachers in all 10 of the elementary schools in Pennsylvania's Harrisburg School District to rate the aggressive behaviors of their students on a six-point scale with items such as "gets in many fights" and "cruelty, bullying or meanness to others." Using these data, the team recruited a group of high-risk children (207 children) and a group of low-risk children (132 children) to undergo a range of neurobiological measures aimed at understanding how aggressive children experience and manage emotions differently than their non-aggressive classmates.

The team assessed all of the children's cognitive and academic skills using standardized tests that identified the children's developmental level of vocabulary, spatial reasoning and memory. In addition, the team asked teachers to provide ratings of each child's behaviors, including their levels of aggression, disobedience and sadness, as well as their social skills and level of self-control in the classroom.

The researchers also assessed the children's brain functioning using a mobile research laboratory they brought to the schools. Within the mobile lab, the team measured the children's heart rate and skin conductance activity during tasks designed to elicit emotional responses, including showing the children short video clips of a cartoon character in a variety of situations depicting fear, sadness, happiness and anger. The researchers wanted to understand how emotional and physical arousal to different types of emotions differed between children who engage in aggressive behavior and children who don't engage in aggressive behavior, as well as how different children who engage in aggressive behavior react.

According to Gatzke-Kopp, the assessments enabled the researchers to understand how cognitive and emotional processing may contribute to the development of aggressive tendencies. Specifically, the team found that 90 percent of the aggressive kids in the study could be characterized as either low in verbal ability or more easily physiologically aroused. The results will appear in the August 2012 issue of Development and Psychopathology.

"What we may be seeing is that there are at least two different routes through which a child may act aggressively," Gatzke-Kopp said. "Because these are very different processes, these children may need different approaches to changing their behavior."

The first group of kids was characterized by lower verbal ability, lower levels of cognitive functioning and fewer executive function skills.

According to Gatzke-Kopp, children need verbal skills to understand the feelings of others and guidance from adults, and to express feelings without hitting. They also need adequate cognitive and executive-function abilities to manipulate information and to think of alternatives to hitting and fighting.

"This group of kids may be functioning at a cognitive level that is more akin to a preschooler than a kindergartner," Gatzke-Kopp said. "They have a harder time extracting what other people are feeling. They don't have a nuanced sense of emotions; everything is either happy or sad to them. So they might not be as good at recognizing how their behavior is making another child feel. They may literally have a hard time 'using their words,' so hitting becomes an easier solution when they are frustrated."

The second group of kids had good verbal and cognitive functioning, but they were more physiologically aroused. They were more emotionally reactive, and tended to have more stressors in their lives.

"These children may be able to tell you that if somebody pushed them on the playground they would go get a teacher, but the push happens and they kind of lose it and it doesn't matter what they should do, they just act on impulse," Greenberg said. "One possibility is that the threshold for managing frustration is quite low for these kids. So what we might consider a minor annoyance to them is a major threat. When they are calm they function very well, but when they lose control of their emotions, they can't control their behavior."

In the future, the team plans to examine how these different types of children respond to an intervention delivered over the second half of kindergarten and the first half of first grade.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health funded this research. Other authors of the paper include Christine Fortunato, postdoctoral fellow, and Michael Coccia, statistical consultant, both in the Penn State Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development.

Why You Need To Begin a Network Advertising Business

Why do we focus therefore much on network marketing as a way to attain economic freedom? Aren?t there a lot of other methods to succeed economically online and even offline? Well, it?s true that we now have several other ways you could go about trying to make money these days, particularly on the net, and even several other ways to create extra income, but in my estimation, online network marketing gives you the most effective possibility of achieving economic freedom and making passive income. Attaining financial freedom through the network marketing enterprize model is the chosen topic of the site since there is number other method on the Internet that?s as profitable and offers the potential for an enormous regular extra income. Network marketing, plus and the Web move together properly. The Internet has drastically changed this industry for the higher, permitting it to be described as a true supply of passive, automated revenue for those that hope to do the first set up work, or at the least get involved with the right process and the right team. The network marketing business model is one that encourages people to help each other. It is actually demanded by it. If you do not help your downline succeed, you?ll not encounter as much success. That?s a fact. However, how you help them succeed has changed a good deal with the arrival of the Net. You are no further necessary to make cold calls, visit resort conferences, put fliers on windshields and begin artificial discussions with people at book stores and gas stations. These methods are obsolete and are enough to suppress any new distributor from staying in this market long term. No, now there is just a better way. A far greater approach. It is named online network marketing, or destination marketing. The prospect now concerns you, and YOU are in the position of authority and authority. You seem credible, because you have branded yourself and your company online. If you?re clever, you have also demonstrated potential prospects how it is possible to develop a marketing business through robotic online programs that take away all of the annoyances of the old business style. As long as you have printed yourself correctly, set up the correct process to make money and offered your company?s products and business opportunity online, you have the ability to make an important continuing income. All that is required at this time is to market your organization to those people who are looking for it. How do you do that you might ask? Pay per click advertising, search engine ranking, websites, online classified advertisements, and a number of other forms of Internet marketing techniques that are certain to get your website more traffic, which means more people help you and your opportunity, which means more people join your organization and of course that means bigger salaries. And once this really is put up, it could practically be achieved on auto-pilot, allowing a true passive income to be made by you. Do you see why network marketing lends itself so effectively to the Internet now?The prospect of profit is unlimited, and just as importantly, the level of leisure time you?ve to do whatever you like is unlimited after the original setup work is done in the first year or so. It?s a truly no-brainer. Find a great network marketing organization whose services and products you prefer. Make certain they have a good business model, compensation program and credibility in the online business world. And perhaps most significant, be sure you select a sponsor who knows what they are doing. After you?ve accomplished all this, it all comes down to creating a website that reflects leads for you and then successfully marketing that website. Or you can also have another person do that for you. It is very easy definitely, but VERY lucrative.A word of warning to the get rich quick crowd: Network marketing is a remarkable business model, especially on the Internet, but it?s still a, and like every other business, it will involve some work, time, economic investment and perhaps most of all, persistence. You are getting to need to have patience and be quite persistent to get it off the ground. Obviously, after you do you?re golden. But until that time, you are planning to have to keep your final goal at the forefront of one?s head and recall why it?s all worth it. And it shouldn?t get all that long to obtain it off the floor. That?s the point in the end. Take the following 12 months, devote you to ultimately expanding your network marketing business, and enjoy the benefits of an amazing continuing revenue each and every month for the remainder of one?s life. There is just nothing else like network marketing. But before you go jump into the next chance that?s a modern sales presentation and a fast talker that hypes up all the advantages of his company, I?ve an of caution for you. You usually hear in regards to the significance of making numerous streams of income. But in network marketing, many suppliers have the habit of creating numerous channels of outgo. What I mean is, they jump about from company to company, chasing whatever sounds the very best at that moment and hoping this is the one they strike it rich with. PLEASE do not be one of these people, unless you wish to find yourself broke.Take my assistance and do your research. Do your research on the organization, the payment program and your upline. Read the company?s policies and procedures, examine on the web reviews of products and services and make certain they are popular, and actually study the backdrop of a possible sponsor or upline. After you have explored and examined every aspect of the network marketing opportunity (the same as you would do for another type of business or even a work) and you?re satisfied with anything you have discovered, then it is a good decision to join. But just join one organization, and invest in building it with your entire focus. Do not make the mistake of joining numerous options and spinning your wheels in every of them. Develop a business with a company that?s worth investing and don?t look back.Compare companies, products, prices and compensation strategies. Carefully consider your upline and the web process you?ll be involved with. Once you?ve done these specific things, you are prepared to make the best decision. Ideally it will be a decision that sets you up financially for the rest of your life. I fully believe it will be.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? In advance of Mitt Romney?s campaign visit to the Philadelphia area Friday, Mayor Michael Nutter participated in a news conference by way of telephone Thursday, stumping for President Obama.

?President Obama has closed the doughnut hole in Medicare and made healthcare more affordable for our seniors,? Nutter said. ?President Obama has supported our troops abroad and our veterans when they returned home.? President Obama increased access to Pell grants for an additional 10-million college students and invested in early childhood education and took our economy and brought it back from the brink of collapse and got it growing again.?

Nutter said we are fortunate to have a president who ?gets it.?

?President Obama has shown this not just in words, but also in deeds looking out for all Americans, working to expand opportunity, reward hard work and make sure everyone from Wall Street to Main Street plays by the same rules.?

The other person on the call was Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chairman Jim Burn who said Romney?s tax plan is for millionaires and billionaires to pay lower tax rates than many middle class families.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? North Carolina?s public university system is trying to show off its 17-campus emphasis on pulling concepts out of classrooms and into commerce.

The first North Carolina Social Business Conference on Thursday in Greensboro aims to boost a hybrid of business and charity that?s getting more attention since the Great Recession highlighted that free markets cannot provide all society needs.

The competition at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro pits 31 student-led teams developing the equivalent of economic perpetual-motion machines.

The teams are presenting business plans explaining how they would build a profit-making enterprise generating cash to help retrain the unemployed or feed the hungry.Social businesses are part of the spread of the business values of innovation and financial discipline into government and charities.

Insight: U.S. probe of HSBC tangled up in bureaucracy, infighting

(Reuters) - In the second half of 2010, a senior federal prosecutor in West Virginia drafted an impassioned plea to his bosses in Washington to end infighting as multiple government agencies pursued a high-stakes investigation of HSBC Holdings Plc.

William Ihlenfeld II had been fighting a losing battle against fellow prosecutors in Washington and Brooklyn, who were jointly conducting a parallel probe into the British bank's controls over illicit transactions.

Ihlenfeld, the U.S. Attorney in Wheeling, West Virginia, said in the draft letter, a copy of which has been seen by Reuters, that there had been a breakdown in the relationship, and his office had been told to stand down in June 2010 by the Department of Justice, just as they were preparing to indict the bank for as many as 175 counts of money laundering.

An earlier mediation had failed. So for the first time in 30 years, Ihlenfeld said his office was seeking an arbitration of such a dispute.

"We have made several offers to amicably settle this dispute by dividing the investigation in a way that guaranteed the two investigations would never interfere with each other," Ihlenfeld wrote. "Despite our best effort, all of our offers have been categorically rejected. None of our proposals has even induced a counter-offer."

"As a general proposition, there is no reason why the professionals from different DOJ components cannot work together for the common good," Ihlenfeld wrote in the letter addressed to Gary Grindler, then the acting deputy attorney general. "This particular situation is no exception."

It is not clear whether Ihlenfeld ultimately sent the letter or whether the Department of Justice agreed to arbitrate the dispute. But the draft provides a rare insight into the secret world of prosecutors, and sheds new light on a large and complex U.S. investigation that some two years later may lead to a settlement of more than $1 billion with HSBC.

At least 11 different U.S. departments, offices and regulators - largely comprising the two competing groups - as well as the U.S. Senate have probed HSBC for money-laundering lapses in investigations that date back to at least 2007.

Ihlenfeld's letter, other Department of Justice documents, regulatory filings and interviews with those close to the HSBC prosecution show how multiple - and sometimes overlapping - inquiries have slowed the prosecution and added to costs, as well as led to rancor within the department and between different government agencies.

They also underscore the problems the government faces in policing global banks such as HSBC that can enable a wide range of illicit transactions -- from small-time fraud to laundering of tens of billions of dollars for drug cartels and countries that are the subject of U.S. sanctions, such as Iran.

At one point, for example, a U.S. prosecutor in West Virginia was forced to explain to HSBC that dual Justice Department probes were not duplicative, according to a letter from the prosecutor to the bank's lawyer.

Such strife among different government agencies has surfaced in other complex investigations. In August, New York State bank regulator Benjamin Lawsky drew the ire of federal agencies when he independently pursued a $340 million settlement with another British bank, Standard Chartered Plc, rather than being part of an ongoing federal probe.

It is all at least partially due to a heightened effort by U.S. and state regulators to crack down on money laundering. Besides HSBC and Standard Chartered, a series of global banks including JPMorgan Chase & Co and Citigroup Inc have faced investigations into lapses related to money laundering.

A Department of Justice spokesman said in an emailed statement that the department continues to "aggressively pursue" the HSBC probe "in coordination with its internal components and external partners."

"Financial investigations, by their nature, are complex and time consuming," spokesman Dean Boyd wrote. "The department's track record in bringing successful enforcement actions in the banking industry speaks for itself, and has had a significant, positive impact on banking industry practices."

Spokespeople for the federal prosecutors in Brooklyn and West Virginia, as well as the other government agencies mentioned in this article declined to comment.

An HSBC spokesman also declined comment.

PARALLEL PROBES

Prosecutors in Ihlenfeld's office had been working since at least December 2008 on the case, which originated with an investigation of a local doctor's use of HSBC accounts to move $3 million tied to Medicare fraud, according to the letter.

But as the investigators looked deeper, they realized the case was merely "the tip of the iceberg", Ihlenfeld wrote.

Prosecutors in West Virginia had been working with two units of the Treasury Department - the Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigation arm and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (Fincen), which enforces anti-money laundering laws.

Brooklyn prosecutors, meanwhile, had aligned with the more powerful Washington-based Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section of the Department of Justice. Investigators in that enterprise also included the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a unit of the Department of Homeland Security.

The Asset Forfeiture unit had the power to veto any proposed money laundering indictment or settlement with HSBC, according to the letter.

Ihlenfeld touted the support of his own team, the IRS and Fincen, describing the agencies' investigators as "the best of the best when it comes to paper cases."

He also wrote that his office was much further along in the investigation, arguing that his group had devoted well over 5,543 hours to the investigation.

In one swipe at Brooklyn prosecutors, Ihlenfeld wrote that they did not realize that HSBC operated a bulk cash processing center "within walking distance" of their offices until West Virginia prosecutors pointed it out to them during the mediation.

He wrote that on March 24, 2010, the top prosecutor in Brooklyn had said that their investigation was "just starting".

"Even if DOJ's budget was unlimited, it would be wasteful for" the competing group to replicate what was already a successful investigation, he wrote.

In the end, Ihlenfeld did not win the battle. Prosecutors, including those in Washington, now oversee the probe, which is still ongoing.

For HSBC, after more than five years of investigation, a final settlement may be approaching. The bank has already set aside $700 million to cover those costs, and said in a regulatory filing in July that they could be "significantly higher".

Little evidence supports medical treatment options for adolescents with autism

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Vanderbilt University researchers are reporting today that there is insufficient evidence to support the use of medical interventions in adolescents and young adults with autism.

Despite studies that show that many adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorders are being prescribed medications, there is almost no evidence to show whether these medications are helpful in this population, the researchers said.

These findings are featured in the Sept. 24 issue of Pediatrics.

"We need more research to be able to understand how to treat core symptoms of autism in this population, as well as common associated symptoms such as anxiety, compulsive behaviors and agitation," said Jeremy Veenstra-VanderWeele, M.D., assistant professor of Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Pharmacology and Vanderbilt Kennedy Center investigator.

"Individuals, families and clinicians currently have to make decisions together, often in a state of desperation, without clear guidance on what might make things better and what might make things worse, and too often, people with autism spectrum disorders end up on one or more medications without a clear sense of whether the medicine is helping."

This research is part of a larger report on interventions for adolescents and young adults with autism that found there is little evidence to support findings, good or bad, for all therapies currently used.

The researchers systematically screened more than 4,500 studies and reviewed the 32 studies published from January 1980 to December 2011 on therapies for people ages 13 to 30 with autism spectrum disorders. They focused on the outcomes, including harms and adverse effects, of interventions, including medical, behavioral, educational and vocational.

Key findings:

Some evidence revealed that treatments could improve social skills and educational outcomes such as vocabulary or reading, but the studies were generally small and had limited follow-up.

Limited evidence supports the use of medical interventions in adolescents and young adults with autism. The most consistent findings were identified for the effects of antipsychotic medications on reducing problem behaviors that tend to occur with autism, such as irritability and aggression. Harms associated with medications included sedation and weight gain.

Only five articles tested vocational interventions, all of which suggested that certain vocational interventions may be effective for certain individuals, but each study had significant flaws that limited the researchers' confidence in their conclusions. The findings on vocational interventions were featured in the Aug. 27 issue of Pediatrics.

Although the prevalence of autism is on the rise, much remains to be discovered when it comes to interventions for this population, the researchers concluded.

As recently as the 1970s, autism was believed to affect just one in 2,000 children, but newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in 88 children has an autism spectrum disorder. Boys with autism outnumber girls 5-to-1, which estimates that one in 54 boys in the United States has autism.

Chris Brown Gets Another Wrist Slap

What a world for Chris Brown. Even though he likes to think of himself as a victim of the merciless celeb news machine, he has gotten off pretty easy on every level. I can?t help but still have some rage in me over the Rihanna thing. Yes, I know it?s been a while, and we are supposed to be a nation of forgivers. But it really makes the pill harder to swallow when you hear about him joking to women he picks up that he ?won?t beat them? if they go home with him. Here are a few things that get on my nerves: Being convicted of a violent felony without doing any real time? Yep. That?s him. He has yet to really own up to anything he has done, or even really act humble about it. He didn?t serve any real time. In fact, the judge even puckered up and kissed his butt over being such a model offender for the job well done while he completed his community service. How nice. Being involved in a violent bar fight while on probation? Well, this one is a little foggy. So far it?s hard to tell who started what, and [...]

Giant 655-pound Leatherback turtle rescued and released

A huge 7-foot long Leatherback sea turtle was treated for dehydration and released off Cape Cod. Meanwhile, a pregnant hawksbill sea turtle was rescued in the US Virgin Islands, and has since laid 55 eggs.

The New England Aquarium in Boston say it's released a 7-foot (2.1-meter)-long, 655-pound (297-kilogram) leatherback sea turtle back into waters off Cape Cod after it was treated for dehydration, trauma, and shock.

The turtle was found stranded near the tip of the cape Thursday. Experts at the aquarium say the male turtle was underweight (adult males typically weigh 1,000 pounds) and lethargic, and a large portion of its left front flipper was missing because of some kind of trauma.

Veterinarians treated it, and aquarium officials say the turtle regained its strength, and they released it off Harwichport on Saturday.

Leatherback sea turtles are endangered and the largest reptile in the world. Experts treated the turtle using information obtained from research on leatherbacks that were briefly captured over the past few summers off Cape Cod.

Leatherbacks migrate up the East Coast each June to feed on abundant sea jellies (jellyfish) in Massachusetts waters, particularly around the Cape and the Islands. They will migrate south for the winter in September and October, according to the New England Aquarium.

Hawksbill sea turtled airlifted from Virgin Islands

In other turtle rescue news, a female hawksbill sea turtle airlifted from the U.S. Virgin Islands to the Florida Keys-based Turtle Hospital was recovering Saturday and producing eggs, officials said.

The turtle, named Good Hope after the beach in St. Croix where she was discovered, has laid 55 eggs since arriving at the hospital in Marathon on Sept. 1.

Hospital manager Bette Zirkelbach said X-rays revealed more eggs were being produced, indicating that the turtle has been responding to antibiotics, wound care and physical therapy.

Some 47 eggs deemed "viable" were incubated, nestled in beach sand shipped from St. Croix, she said.

"Good Hope would have laid (eggs) on Good Hope beach in St. Croix, with that St. Croix sand," said Zirkelbach. "And those hatchlings would have come out and the first thing they would have contact with is St. Croix sand."

It can't be determined if the eggs are fertile, however, until the traditional 60-day gestation period ends.

The endangered hawksbill's continued improvement is good news to hospital director Richie Moretti, who founded the veterinary facility dedicated solely to the treatment of sea turtles more than 25 years ago.

"When 'Good Hope' came to the Turtle Hospital, it looked like we might have to amputate her front flippers," Moretti said. "But she's getting stronger and stronger every day."

With the turtle seemingly no longer in danger of dying, hospital staff is now trying to preserve the vision in the reptile's swollen eyes.

Good Hope was found severely injured Aug. 24 after Tropical Storm Isaac brushed St. Croix. Officials believe the animal was repeatedly gaffed in the front flippers, perhaps to remove fishing gear.

A Virgin Islands veterinarian treated her for a week before local fish and wildlife officials decided to send the animal on an American Airlines jet to the Turtle Hospital for treatment.
