From Fashion to Films

When documentary filmmaker Cindy Meehl was 7, she fell in love with a pony at a birthday party. ?I just wanted to get up close and touch the animal. I was in awe of it,? she says. Fifty-six-year-old Meehl smiles as she tells this anecdote, her tanned face brightening at the memory. As she talks, one of her four dogs snores audibly in the living room. Meehl and her husband live on a farm with a veritable menagerie?those dogs, a bunny, and two horses?in Redding, Conn.
She started riding at the age of 10 in her hometown of Jackson, Miss., and she still has a trace of a soft Southern accent. Meehl would ride as much as she could and sketch horses in her spare time?art was her other main interest growing up. But she never thought she?d combine the two, as she did with her first feature-length documentary film Buck, about horse trainer Buck Brannaman.
Way before she became an award-winning movie director, Meehl was a successful fashion designer. She started her college education at Mississippi State and then moved to New York to finish her degree at Marymount Manhattan College, after which she studied art at the National Academy. When she graduated, she sold ties at Bloomingdale?s and wore a lot of shoulder pads. (It was the ?80s.) She started designing dresses with two other artists using hand-painted silks.
The way she tells it, she stormed into Bergdorf Goodman and presented her line, which at that point was called ?Sasha, Cindy and Phil.? Even though she wasn?t a fashion insider by any means, she had spunk. Not only did Bergdorf?s buy the clothes; they put the frocks in their heralded window display at 58th Street and Fifth Avenue. The business kept building and building, but Meehl realized that she didn?t enjoy the creative pressure of fashion?s unrelenting grind. ?It sounds so glamorous, but it didn?t ultimately appeal,? Meehl says. ?You work that hard, and you?re still always behind.?
Her final designs were for a friend?s wedding party. She was recently married, and she and her husband, writer Brian Meehl, had just moved to the horse farm in Connecticut where she lives today. Over the next several years, ?I had children and an art studio,? Meehl says. And of course, she had the horses. Then, about 10 years ago, she took a clinic in Montana from Buck Brannaman, and it altered her entire outlook on riding.
Brannaman?s way of dealing with horses is staggeringly sensitive. The way Meehl describes his methods while demonstrating with Red, one of her two horses, is that Brannaman teaches you how to speak their language. Instead of yanking on its reins to tell it what to do, you use your body to signal how you want the horse to move. Meehl seems totally relaxed when communicating with Red. She has that same easy repartee with Red when she?s riding him, showing how Brannaman?s body-language-based methods work on horseback.
?I wanted to tell other people about Buck,? Meehl says, but her fellow horsemen and women, especially on the East Coast, weren?t particularly receptive. She didn?t feel capable of teaching Brannaman?s methods, until she realized that a film would be a good way to get his style of horsemanship out into the world. Her two daughters were almost grown at this point?the oldest was in college, and the youngest was in high school?and Meehl was looking for a new project. Though it doesn?t, at first glance, seem related, her fashion background was helpful when she first started thinking about making Buck. ?I?ve had a lot of art training,? Meehl explains ?and I?m very visual and interested in composition and structure. I knew how I wanted it to look.?
But she was also humble, and she had very little experience with a camera. So she went about hiring the best producers and editors she could find. She tried two filmmaking teams before she started working with producers Julie Goldman and Andrea Meditch. She flew down to Washington, D.C., to have lunch with them, ?At that point I had some footage to show them. I was, of course, biting my nails to see if they?d actually help me,? Meehl says.
They signed on, and they shaped Brannaman?s moving life story for the screen. In addition to being a so-called ?horse whisperer? who can tame the wildest of stallions, Brannaman also survived a brutal childhood in rural Wyoming. His mother died when he was a child, and he ended up in a foster home. He went on to have a wonderful relationship with his wife and three daughters, and established a thriving business.
Meehl also credits Buck?s editor, Toby Shimin, for helping her tell an inspiring? story about Brannaman?so inspiring that the film won the audience award when it played the Sundance Film Festival in 2011. Meehl has also created 7 Clinics, an instructional DVD series using Brannaman?s methods; she directed a music video for the independent country artist Templeton Thompson for the song ?When I Get That Pony Rode?; and she is currently helping to produce another documentary called Unbranded, about three young men riding horses from Mexico to Canada.
But that?s not to say that Meehl is a one-trick documentary-making pony. She is interested in making films about non-equine topics and is in the early stages of planning a documentary about alternative veterinary medicine.
Her message to anyone who is thinking of changing careers is to be receptive to what the world is telling you. Two years ago, ?I had no desire to make a film or be in the film business,? Meehl says. ?I think the message here is you always have to be open. Maybe you?re not on the right path. Just somehow you hear that call, and you go.?

Report: Plans for Australia spy HQ hacked by China
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ? Australian officials on Tuesday refused to confirm or deny whether Chinese hackers had stolen the blueprints of a new spy agency headquarters as a news report claims. A tiny party essential to the ruling coalition's government demanded an inquiry into how much damage may have been done.
Australian Broadcasting Corp. television reported on Monday night that the plans for the 630 million Australian dollar ($608 million) Australian Security Intelligence Organization building had been stolen through a cyberattack on a building contractor. Blueprints that included details such as communications cabling, server locations and security systems had been traced to a Chinese server, the network reported.
Des Ball, an Australian National University cybersecurity expert, said China could use the blueprints to bug the building, which is nearing completion in Canberra, the capital, after lengthy construction delays.
Ball told the ABC that given the breach, ASIO would either have to operate with "utmost sensitivity" within its own building or simply "rip the whole insides out and ... start again."
Attorney General Mark Dreyfus, the minister in charge of the spy agency, on Tuesday refused to confirm or deny the report, citing a longstanding government policy of declining to comment on security matters.
He later said the lakeside glass and concrete structure did not need to be redesigned, and that ASIO will move in this year.
"This building is a very secure, state-of-the-art facility," said Dreyfus, adding that the ABC report contained "unsubstantiated allegations."
"I'm not going to comment on operational matters involving the Australian Security Intelligence Organization or any security matters," he said.
Questioned about the alleged security breach in Parliament, Prime Minister Julia Gillard described the ABC report as "inaccurate" but refused to go into detail.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said China opposed hacking in any form and questioned what evidence the ABC report relied on.
"Since it is technically untraceable, it is very difficult to find the source and identify the hacker," Hong said. "Therefore we have no idea what is the evidence for their report in which they make the claim with such certainty."
He said countries needed to cooperate to fight hacking. "Groundless accusations won't solve the problem," Hong said.
The minor Greens party, which the center-left Labor Party relies on to maintain its minority government, has demanded an inquiry into the future of the troubled building, which has been plagued by cost blowouts from an original budget of 460 million Australian dollars.
"It is time that we had an independent inquiry into the whole sorry history of the ASIO building and the extent to which the current hacking has compromised its capacity to ever be the building and serve the purpose for which it was intended," Greens leader Christine Milne told reporters.
She said no more money should be spent on the building until an inquiry was held into the truth of the hacking allegation and the extent of the alleged security compromise.
The alleged hacking would appear to be "an extremely serious breach" to Australia's intelligence-sharing allies, including the United States, Milne said.
Dreyfus didn't immediately respond to the Greens' call for an inquiry.
ASIO, Australia's main spy agency, has grown rapidly since the al-Qaida attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, and needs the new headquarters to house its growing staff that has trebled to almost 1,800 in a decade.
Tobias Feakin, a security analyst with the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, said that if a security breach has occurred, it could affect intelligence sharing with allies.
"There is no doubt that instances like this, if proved true, create a period of difficulty," Feakin said. "But one thing that would happen is that there would be mutual assistance provided to be able to plug that gap and no intelligence agency could possibly allow that kind of breach to continue."
Foreign Minister Bob Carr refused to discuss the allegations but said the claims do not jeopardize Australia's ties with its most important trading partner, China.
"It's got absolutely no implications for a strategic partnership," Carr said. "We have enormous areas of cooperation with China."

French soldier stabbed in throat outside Paris
PARIS (AP) ? A French soldier was stabbed in the throat in a busy commercial district outside Paris on Saturday, and the government said it was trying to determine if there were any links to the brutal killing of a British soldier by suspected Islamic extremists.
French President Francois Hollande said the identity of the attacker, who escaped, was unknown and cautioned against jumping to conclusions about the assault on the uniformed soldier in the La Defense shopping area. The life of the 23-year-old soldier was not in danger, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
On Wednesday, British soldier Lee Rigby, 25, was viciously stabbed on a London street in broad daylight in a suspected terrorist attack that has raised fears of potential copycat strikes.
The French soldier was on a group patrol as part of a national protection program when he was attacked from behind, prosecutor Robert Gelli told BFM-TV. The assailant did not say a word, Gelli told Europe 1.
"There are elements ? the sudden violence of the attack ? that could lead one to believe there might be a comparison with what happened in London," Interior Minister Manuel Valls told France 2 television. "But at this point, honestly, let us be prudent."
Rigby was attacked while walking outside the Royal Artillery Barracks in the Woolwich area of south London.
The gruesome scene was recorded on witnesses' cellphones, and a video emerged in which one of the two suspects ? his hands bloodied ? boasted of their exploits and warned of more violence as the soldier lay on the ground. Holding bloody knives and a meat cleaver, the suspects waited for police, who shot them in the legs, witnesses said.
In the video, one of the suspects declared, "We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you ... We must fight them as they fight us."
Two Muslim hard-liners have identified that suspect as Michael Adebolajo, a Christian who converted to Islam and attended several London demonstrations organized by banned British radical group al-Muhajiroun.
French security forces have been on heightened alert since their country launched a military intervention in the African nation of Mali in January to regain territory seized by Islamic radicals. British Prime Minister David Cameron was himself in Paris meeting with Hollande when he first received word of the London attack.
Last year, three French paratroopers were killed by a man police described as a French-born Islamic extremist who then went on to strike a Jewish school in the south of France, killing four more people.

EA: PS4, XBox One Are a 'Generation Ahead' of Gaming PCs
Now those are fighting words, mister.
Rajat Taneja, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Electronic Arts, conjured up an article on LinkedIn of all places talking about the technology behind Microsoft's new Xbox One console. He claims that both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are somehow five years ahead of the most extravagant PCs today due to their system-on-chip (SoC) architecture.
"These architectures are a generation ahead of the highest end PC on the market and their unique design of the hardware, the underlying operating system and the live service layer create one of the most compelling platforms to reimagine game mechanics," he states.
Seriously? Did he just say that? He goes on to say that benchmarks on just the video and audio performance alone are 8-10 times superior to the current generation consoles. "The compute capabilities of these platforms and the data transfer speeds we can now bank on, essentially removes any notion of rationing of systems resources for our game engines," he adds.
Of course, he then talks about the company's IGNITE and Frostbite engines, and how they have been tailored to take full advantage of the new console hardware. In a FPS like Battlefield 4, that combination means more detailed gameplay, behavior and awareness for characters and more detailed appearance down to the lighting and clothing on the soldiers. In sports titles, gamers receive a dose of human intelligence that simulate instincts, awareness and unpredictability that?s more like real-life sport.
"These next-gen platforms create dynamic, living worlds," he said. "Your game could change overnight depending on actions by other gamers around the globe. Your player stats and information can be updated in real time with real-world player stats and injury reports. These consoles are also inherently more social ? something that didn?t matter much when the last consoles came out eight years ago."
As Destructoid points out, the "hype train is at full speed now the Xbox One and PS4 are both public knowledge, and Electronic Arts is riding first class." The article reads like one big advertisement for the publisher, and may even come across as offensive to those who know consoles will never surpass PC? unless the PC is extinct, of course. Nvidia said there will always be a place for the high-end desktop, and we're right there with them in that opinion.
Why? It should be obvious: the PC market continues to progressively advance whereas new consoles are launched every five or so years. If anything, it's the mobile industry that the PC and console sectors should be worried about, as its advancement slope if by far a lot steeper than the PC segment. That said, until we actually get our hands on both consoles, or at least see the actual full list of specs, we're going to remain highly skeptical of EA's claims regarding next-gen versus PC.

Private Spaceships for Space Tourists to Launch Big Test Flights
LONG BEACH, Calif. ? Private suborbital space planes built by two space tourism companies will likely launch some major test flights before this year is out, their builders say.
The commercial spaceflight company Virgin Galactic plans to launch its SpaceShipTwo spacecraft into space for the first time by the end of 2013. The company performed its first rocket-powered test flight in April. Meanwhile, the firm XCOR Aerospace is aiming for the inaugural non-spacebound flight of its Lynx vehicle during that same time period, officials from both companies said on Tuesday (May 21).
"We are on a path to hopefully be in outer space by the end of this year and be carrying commercial customers in the back of the vehicle on flights to outer space not too long after," Will Pomerantz, Virgin Galactic's vice president for special projects, told attendees at the Space Tech Expo here. "It has perhaps been a longer journey than any of us expected, as seems to happen with all of us in the aerospace industry. But we're incredibly pleased with where we are." Space tourism market
Pomerantz appeared on a commercial panel moderated by NanoRacks managing director Jeffrey Manber that included XCOR chief operating officer Andrew Nelson and Eric Anderson, chairman of the space tourism firm Space Adventures. The panelists were optimistic about progress on both the development and business sides of the industry.
"Finally, it seems that we're going to have a robust space tourism market," said Manber, who led efforts to commercialize the Russian space station Mir in the late 1990s. "The customer is going to have different choices ? There are different price ranges, different experiences."
Pomerantz said Virgin Galactic has signed up around 580 clients who have put down more than $70 million in total deposits for flights. Customers range in age from under 18 to their early 90s, and include people from more than 50 nations.
XCOR has sold 275 flights on the two-person Lynx spacecraft during the past 24 months, part of a "Right Stuff" experience that places the spaceflight participant in the cockpit with the pilot, Nelson said. Virgin Galactic's larger SpaceShipTwo will include two pilots up front and six passengers in the cabin.
"We're competing with the world's greatest marketeer, so we have to try to make it a little bit different," Nelson said, referring to Virgin Galactic founder Sir Richard Branson, the flashy British billionaire behind the global Virgin Group empire. "We have to differentiate ourselves in the market ? We probably wouldn't be nearly as creative if Virgin wasn't in the market."
Global contest
Manufacturer Unilever purchased 22 Lynx seats that it will award to winners of a global competition, part of a marketing campaign for its Axe and Lynx grooming products. Nelson said that more than 600,000 people entered the contest in the first three months. The company, which will spend a reported $130 million on the contest this year, has seen sales jump an estimated 20 to 30 percent in the AXE segment in the immediate aftermath of the campaign launch, he added.
Meanwhile, SpaceShipTwo has become an integral part of the Virgin Group, which has a large base of clients who passionately love the brand and are eager to try the next experience that Branson can create for them, Pomerantz said.
"For us at Virgin, certainly, it's all about the brand," he said. "I mean, that's what Virgin Group is ? We have everything from wine to Formula One cars to submarines to, they used to do wedding gowns. It's everything. It's whatever Richard wants to do and whatever he thinks he can make money on and he can make the world a better place with."
The panelists were upbeat on the overall business climate, saying it is becoming easier to find investors and partners willing to put money into the industry.
"I think there's going to be our Netscape moment soon, during the next 24 to 36 months," Nelson said, referring to the Internet boom set off when the Web browser company went public.
Anderson marveled at the changes that have occurred in the industry since he founded Space Adventures in 1997. "It's an entirely different time now than it was 15 or 16 years ago," he said.

Graduates in tornado-raked Okla. town vow to stay

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? Seven tornadoes have swept through their town since they were born, but as new graduates donned caps and gowns to say goodbye to their high schools Saturday, they vowed they wouldn't say goodbye to Moore.
"I wouldn't want to be in any other place. It's our roots. Tornadoes are a part of life here," said 18-year-old Brooke Potter, whose current college aspirations take her to two neighboring towns.
Saturday's graduations for Westmoore, Southmoore and Moore high schools are another step toward normalcy for this Oklahoma City suburb ravaged by an extremely strong tornado. Monday's twister killed 24, including seven children at Plaza Towers Elementary School.
"I want to end up back here," Madison Dobbs, 18, said. "I've been here my whole life and can't picture myself anywhere else. Tornadoes happen anywhere."
While that's true, few other places have the amount and severity of tornadoes like Oklahoma ? and no other place has had a tornado like Moore. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman says the Oklahoma City area has been struck by more tornadoes than any other U.S. city, citing records that date to 1893.
When the current graduating class was in second grade, Moore experienced an EF4 tornado with winds approaching 200 mph. And three months before they started pre-kindergarten, a twister with the highest winds on record ? 302 mph ? sliced through their town.
"Crazy storms happen, The goods outweigh the bads," said Potter, who wants to attend Oklahoma City Community College, and then transfer to the University of Oklahoma in neighboring Norman.
With graduates wearing red or black caps and gowns, Westmoore was the first of three schools to hold commencement ceremonies Saturday at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.
A teacher in the district said despite being big enough to have three high schools, the 56,000-strong community is still tightly knit.
"This is such a big district, but this is a small town," said Tammy Glasgow, a second-grade teacher at Briarwood Elementary, which was also destroyed but didn't have any deaths. "When you see somebody in the street, it's not a 'hi' and a handshake, it's a hug."
Some students lost everything in the violent storm. Southmoore senior Callie Dosher, 18, said she sifted through the debris of her family's destroyed home in the past few days, looking to recover precious possessions ? her mom's two Bibles and the teddy bear Callie's granddad gave her shortly before he passed away.
But Dosher, too, wants to stay: "These people, I've grown up with them. I have all my friends here," she said.
Miranda Mann, an 18-year-old Southmoore grad whose family also lost their home, couldn't recognize her own neighborhood because of the heavy damage. Yet they have vowed to rebuild on the same ground.
"We loved the house we were in," she said. "But we get to make new memories in the new house."
Westmoore Senior Alex Davis, 18, will attend University of Oklahoma after graduation partly so he can stay close to friends and family.
"It speaks to how the community's banded together," he said. "We're not going to let a natural disaster beat us."

'Gimme the Loot' is ... meandering and a little shallow. And even at 79 minutes it feels a little too long for what's essentially the film equivalent of a short story.
A thousand-watt jolt of mischief, a spunky, funky, ebullient indie that packs its 81 minutes with cinematic exhilaration.
It may be a slight movie, but it has its sunny charms.
A movie about teenage taggers in the Bronx should be fast and raw, scruffy and loose, and Adam Leon's Gimme the Loot is just that.
As it lopes along, the movie offers a warm but very sharp portrait of New York's have-nots and their uneasy relationship with the haves.
"Gimme the Loot" shouldn't be as appealing and exuberant as it is, it really shouldn't.
First-time feature director Adam Leon's shots are precise and full of detail.
The film's strong suit is its use of locations.
The film is episodic and determinedly offbeat, funny at its best, boring at its worst.
Shot on the streets of New York in a loose, freeform style, this lively comedy-drama feels somewhat underdeveloped, leaving us doubtful about its realism.
It's a great deal of fun, emotionally touching, and even surprisingly old-fashioned.
Some of the movie doesn't exactly convince, and some of the scenes have an actors-improv feel to them, but there's always plenty of humour and energy.
Endlessly entertaining, refreshingly light-hearted and bursting with summer soul, Gimme The Loot joins the pantheon of great New York movies.
It's a shaggy dog story with a certain amount of charm but not nearly enough drama.
The movie is unpolished, and it matters not a jot, because Leon has written super roles for these kids and invests their relationship with such sly feeling.
Hickson walks the line between bravado and vulnerability, while Washington has a charisma, spark and beauty that should ensure this won't be the last we see of her.
Bolstered by a low-key but assured aesthetic and a soundtrack of vintage soul and doo-wop, the film is infectiously enjoyable, with frequently amusing insights and an affable shagginess.
Out of nowhere, Adam Leon might just have delivered the first great New York film of the decade.
Charming and engaging low-budget indie with a witty script, likeable characters, a strong sense of time and place and a pair of terrific performances from its two young leads.
Funny and freewheeling, it's a joy.
A slim, low-budget coming-of-age tale whose richness lies entirely in its interstices. A keenly observed work that celebrates the unfettered joys of youth, and rewards by reminding of the power of a simple tale told well.
Simultaneously real and hopeful, "Loot" has almost no plot, but when the setting is so fresh and the characters feel so raw and alive, who needs one?
Ghetto laughs with a sophisticated point of view.

Scientists make breast cancer advance that turns previous thinking on its head
May 23, 2013 ? UEA scientists make breast cancer advance that turns previous thinking on its head Scientists at the University of East Anglia have made an advance in breast cancer research which shows how some enzymes released by cancerous cells could have a protective function.
New research published today in the Journal of Biological Chemistry reveals that an enzyme called MMP-8 (matrix metalloproteinase-8) could be acting as a locator to the immune system, which then becomes activated to attack tumours. It was originally thought that the production of MMPs by breast cancer cells worked to promote cancer growth.
Lead researcher Prof Dylan Edwards from UEA's School of Biological Sciences said: "MMPs are a family of enzymes that are released from cancer cells. They were once thought to act like 'molecular scissors' to snip away at the scaffolding structures outside cells and clear a path for the cancer cells to invade and spread to other organs.
"Drugs that target this broad family of enzymes were trialled to treat cancer in the 1990s but largely failed. This led us to think that not all of these enzymes were bad guys that promoted tumour growth and spread."
Scientists from UEA worked with clinicians at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital to look in detail at the patterns of MMPs in breast tumours from patients. Previous research published in 2008 revealed that one of these enzymes, known as MMP-8, has a protective role which holds tumours in check. And patients whose breast tumours have more of this particular enzyme seemed to have better outcomes.
The latest research was funded by cancer charity the Big C and carried out by PhD student Sally Thirkettle. Prof Edwards said: "She has shown that if she makes breast cancer cells produce MMP-8, it causes them to produce two other inflammatory factors (IL-6 and IL-8) that have previously been shown to promote cancer. However, breast tumour cells that over-produce MMP-8 don't survive long-term -- the enzyme stops them growing."
"We now think that in tumours, MMP-8 acts as a sort of 'find me' signal to the immune system, which then becomes activated to attack the tumour, which may help to explain its protective function.
"The fact that a protective enzyme such as MMP-8 was also blocked by the first generation anti-MMP drugs used in the 1990s also partly explains why these drugs failed in the clinic," he added.
It is still unknown exactly how MMP-8 causes IL-6 and IL-8 to be activated -- but the findings are an important step forward which will help direct further research.

Hollywood producer: Independence would boost ... - News - STV
An independent Scotland would be 'more competitive' on the global stage, according to a Glasgow-born Hollywood producer.
Producer Iain Smith, whose film credits include Cold Mountain and Entrapment, spoke out as the Scottish Government prepares to publish a paper on the economics of independence next week.
He said: "With all the attributes that Scotland enjoys, there are few countries that should be more confident about their economic potential than Scotland.
"Scotland's creative industries in particular have a great story to tell and a bright future. They already contribute hugely to the Scottish economy but there is plenty of room for growth, particularly in the export sector.
"With greater fiscal levers at its disposal, Scotland would be even more competitive on the world stage and able to promote its talent, crafts and services internationally for the economic and cultural benefit of the country.
"In this way Scotland would be equipped to make the most of its comparative advantages, particularly in areas like film and television, games and animation, all of which would boost jobs, raise skill levels and promote new talent."
Mr Smith was joined by chef Roy Brett, of Edinburgh's award-winning Ondine restaurant, and events expert Professor Joe Goldblatt in arguing that Scotland needs to have the range of economic powers independence would bring.
Mr Brett said: "We need to be able to decide our own priorities and solutions to the challenges around us. From restaurant VAT to fishing policy, too many decisions are out of our hands. We have to take control of our own destiny and bring decision making closer to home, with a government right here in Scotland fighting our corner. Not one 400 miles away, totally out of touch."
Prof Goldblatt, founding president of the International Special Events Society, also argued for independence, claiming Scotland would "benefit significantly" from leaving the UK.
"I am confident that as an independent nation, Scotland will soon become one of the most successful tourism destinations in the world," he said.
"This increased international visitation will foster further economic growth as international visitors see the potential for starting or relocating their businesses to Scotland.
"Therefore, in my professional opinion, an independent Scotland will become a stronger and more sustainable economic engine through future tourism investment and that is why I unreservedly support independence for one of the future tourism capitals of the world."
The Scottish Government paper will examine sectors of the economy such as life sciences, food and drink, creative industries, tourism and renewable energy.
Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "Everyone in Scotland should have the confidence in our economy to know we can be a successful independent country.
"In the coming weeks Scotland's economic strengths, the abilities of our people, our natural resources and the opportunities Scotland can take with independence will be set out for all to see, against the economic failures of Westminster that are holding us back.
"Over the last five years the strength of Scotland's economy has ensured that as an independent nation, we would be better off to the tune of ?12.6bn.
"Everyone knows we have a strong offshore oil and gas industry but Scotland is so much more than that. Our food and drink sector is booming, with a turnover of ?12bn last year. Our manufacturing industry exported over ?14bn-worth of goods and in creative industries, life sciences, tourism and new areas like the low-carbon economy, our talent and innovation can deliver real success."

Attacks kill 16 in Iraq, 8 police kidnapped
BAGHDAD (AP) ? A string of attacks killed at least 16 people in Iraq on Saturday, while gunmen abducted eight policemen guarding a post on the country's main highway to Jordan and Syria, the latest in a wave of violence to grip the country.
The shootings and bombings follow three days of attacks that killed 130 people in both Shiite and Sunni areas in scenes reminiscent of retaliatory attacks between the two groups that pushed the country to the brink of civil war in 2006-2007. The spike in bloodshed in recent weeks has raised fears the country may be heading toward a new round of sectarian conflict.
Tensions have been worsening since Iraq's minority Sunnis began protesting what they say is mistreatment at the hands of the Shiite-led government, including random detentions and neglect. The mass demonstrations, which began in December, have largely been peaceful, but the number of attacks rose sharply after a deadly security crackdown on a Sunni protest camp in northern Iraq on April 23.
Majority Shiites control the levers of power in post-Saddam Hussein Iraq. Wishing to rebuild the nation rather than revert to open warfare, they have largely restrained their militias in the past five years or so as Sunni extremist groups such as al-Qaida have frequently targeted them with large-scale attacks. But the sharp jump in attacks on Sunni areas, including bombings on Friday that killed at least 76 people, has fueled concerns of renewed retaliatory killings.
In Saturday's deadliest attack, gunmen broke into the house of an anti-terrorism police captain in the southern suburbs of Baghdad, killing the officer and his family in their sleep. Police officials identified the dead as Cap. Adnan Ibrahim, his wife and two children, aged eight and 10.
The attackers fled the scene, and killed another policeman who tried to stop them at a nearby checkpoint.
Meanwhile in the western Sunni province of Anbar, gunmen kidnapped eight policemen who were guarding a post on the main highway linking Iraq to both Jordan and Syria, according to two police officials.
Earlier in the day, security forces and gunmen clashed in the area after police tried to arrest a Sunni tribal sheik suspected of being behind the killing of three army intelligence soldiers stopped by gunmen near a protest site in the city of Ramadi last month. Iraqi authorities had offered a bounty for the arrest or information leading to the arrest of the sheik, Khamis Abu Risha, and two other people they say were linked to the killings.
The fighting near Abu Risha's house north of Ramadi left three people wounded. No arrests were made. Later, gunmen deployed near the main entrance of Anbar Operations Command headquarters in Ramadi, 115 kilometers (70 miles) west of Baghdad.
Hours later, Ramadi police said a bomb placed under stalls in a small stadium exploded, killing four people who were watching a local soccer match.
Shortly before sunset, a car bomb went off near a small market in in the town of Latifiyah south of Baghdad, killing three people and wounding 12.
Elsewhere, in the predominantly Shiite city of Basra in southern Iraq, gunmen shot and killed a Sunni cleric, Assad Nassir, as he was leaving his house, police said.
Two Iraqi soldiers were also killed and two others wounded when a roadside bomb struck a group of soldiers arriving to inspect the scene of a blast that took place earlier in the northern city of Mosul.
A security official said a roadside bomb hit a police patrol in the northern suburbs of Baghdad, killing one policeman and wounding two others.
Health officials confirmed the death tolls. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

'The Voice' brings back Aguilera, Cee Lo Green
NEW YORK (AP) ? "The Voice" is leaving the judging drama to its rivals.
The NBC singing contest said Friday that Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green will return for "The Voice" Season 5, joining Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.
Their midseason replacements ? Shakira and Usher ? will be back for Season 6, which will air in midseason 2014.
Meanwhile Fox is scrambling to revive "American Idol" after record low ratings for Thursday's finale, with 14.3 million viewers. Original judge Randy Jackson has already announced his exit and Fox is making yet-to-be detailed format changes.
Last week "The Voice" narrowly edged out "Idol" in weekly ratings.

Sonic the Hedgehog arrives on Android, headed exclusively to Nintendo on the console side
USSR and the USA. Batman and Joker. Christoph Waltz and... well, everyone. It's pretty tough to look at the world's best-known rivalries and exclude one of history's finest -- that being, of course, Sonic and Mario. The gritty battle between Nintendo and Sega gave fans on both sides plenty to converse about over the years, and one might say that the video game industry as a whole benefited from the back-and-forth. Now that Sega is a shell of its former self, though, the company's most iconic character is turning to its archrival in search of shelter. On the console side, Nintendo will be the exclusive home for Sonic games going forward, with the Wii U and 3DS set to become the homes for the next three titles -- details of which should be revealed "in the coming weeks." (Update: Looks as if Nintendo has outed a few more details. Sonic Lost World and Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games have been name-checked in particular.)
Meanwhile, Android users will be pleased to know that Sonic the Hedgehog was released today in the Google Play store. It's available for $2.99, while iOS users are also being granted a free update to coincide.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) ? Two commuter trains collided outside New York City during the evening rush hour Friday, injuring 20 or more people, authorities said. There were no reports of fatalities.
The Metro-North Railroad, a commuter line serving the northern suburbs, referred in a news release to a "major derailment" near Fairfield, in southern Connecticut. It said emergency workers were at the scene of the accident, which came shortly after 6 p.m.
Twenty to 25 people were injured, Fairfield Police Officer Matt Panilaitis told The Associated Press. He said there were no fatalities.

SACRAMENTO (LATimes)-
Facing a possible two-day strike next week by patient care and technical workers, the five large University of California medical centers are starting to cancel elective surgeries that had been scheduled as soon as Monday, officials said.
Emergency care will not be shut and patients already in the hospitals across the state will continue to receive care. But many elective procedures will delayed until after the potential strike, set for Tuesday and Wednesday, according to John Stobo, UC?s senior vice president for health sciences and services. Patients are being notified about the surgery delays at the hospitals in San Diego, Irvine, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Davis, he said.
At Sacramento?s UC Davis Medical Center, they told FOX40 they are reviewing upcoming procedures to see which ones could be postponed.
?We will care for as many patients as we can safely manage, depending upon the availability of staff? said David Ong with UC Davis Health Systems in Sacramento.
The union representing the 13,000 nursing assistants, scanning techs, operating room scrubs, respiratory experts and others threatening the strike said it will keep weekend-level staffing in critical areas such as respiratory therapy for intensive care, neonatal and burn units during a walkout.
In case of medical emergencies, some strikers will go back to work and then return to picket lines after the patients are treated, said Todd Stenhouse, spokesman for Local 3299 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. ?The most important thing here is that patient safety be preserved,? he said.
However, UC?s Stobo, who was attending a UC regents meeting in Sacramento on Thursday, said a strike would inconvenience and possibly endanger patients. He said UC would hire temporary replacement workers during a strike, which he estimated could cost UC at least $15 million in lost revenue and extra pay over two days.

"According to [Brigadier General Terry] Ferrell," Manaugh writes, "their current role as Afghan rebels is widely envied: they receive specialized training (for example, in building IEDs) and are held to 'reduced grooming standards,' while their mission is simply to 'stay alive and wreak havoc.' If they die during a NTC simulation, they have to shave and go back on detail on the base, Ferrell added, so the incentive to evade their American opponents is strong."
The full read is well worth it, but a particular note of interest is how Fort Irwin, in order to reflect the nature of contemporary warfare, differs dramatically from traditional training battlegrounds. Manaugh explains:
