NEW YORK (Reuters) - Rengan Rajaratnam, the younger brother of imprisoned hedge fund manager Raj Rajaratnam, pleaded not guilty on Monday to insider trading charges.
The younger Rajaratnam entered his plea in Manhattan federal court, one day after his arrest at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Vinoo Varghese, an attorney for Rajaratnam, said his client arrived in New York early Sunday morning, accompanied on a flight from Brazil by an FBI agent.
Prosecutors on Thursday accused Rengan Rajaratnam, 42, of conspiring with his brother to trade on non-public information concerning Clearwire Corp and Advanced Micro Devices Inc in 2008.
Rajaratnam appeared in court dressed in a blue dress shirt, blue jeans and a dark suit jacket Varghese gave him upon entering the courtroom.
"Not guilty, your honor," he said when U.S. District Judge Naomi Buchwald asked him for his plea. Rajaratnam agreed to the judge's request to refer to him as "R.R."
Lawyers for Rengan Rajaratnam said their client learned through news reports that he had been charged, and volunteered to return immediately from Brazil, where he had lived and worked for the past year, to defend himself.
"Within a matter of hours, Mr. Rajaratnam literally dropped everything and headed to the airport," Varghese told Buchwald. Varghese added that Rajaratnam offered to pay the FBI agent's plane ticket and that he was "mentally and physically drained" from the past 72 hours but determined to defend himself.
The government did not seek Rajaratnam's detention because he volunteered to U.S. authorities to return immediately to face the charges, Assistant U.S. Attorney David Massey said at the hearing. He remains free on a $1 million bond secured by $500,000 in cash and property, Massey said.
Rajaratnam, a U.S. citizen born in Sri Lanka, has surrendered his U.S. passport to the FBI and will be allowed to stay at a Manhattan residence, Massey said. He will also receive mental health counseling because of the stress he is under, Massey told the court.
Buchwald set June 4 for the next court date in the case.
Rengan Rajaratnam, whose full first name is Rajarengan, was a portfolio manager at the hedge fund Galleon Group, and the trades for which he was charged resulted in nearly $1.2 million of illegal profit, according to prosecutors.
The defendant was charged with six counts of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy, and faces up to 20 years in prison on each of the fraud counts.
He also faces separate U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission civil charges. These allege a broader scheme that netted $3 million in illicit gains following trades on stocks including Polycom Inc and Hilton Hotels.
Rengan Rajaratnam's arrest is the latest in a sweeping crackdown on insider trading by the U.S. government.
The office of U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in Manhattan said it has charged 77 people in its investigation since October 2009, 71 of whom have since been convicted.
Raj Rajaratnam, 55, received an 11-year prison sentence in October 2011 after a jury convicted the former billionaire the previous May.
The cases are U.S. v. Rajaratnam, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 13-cr-00211; and SEC v. Rajaratnam in the same court, No. 13-01894.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) ? Democratic U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota intends to announce plans to retire when his term ends next year, Democratic officials told The Associated Press on Monday.
Johnson, the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2006 and later returned to the Senate and won re-election in 2008 while sometimes using a motorized scooter.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to pre-empt Johnson's formal announcement, expected Tuesday in South Dakota.
His departure gives Republicans a prime opportunity to pick up a seat in a deeply conservative state. Johnson is the fifth Democratic incumbent to announce plans not to run again in 2014, joining Carl Levin of Michigan, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey.
Some South Dakota Democrats have promoted the idea that the senator's son, U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson, should seek the Democratic nomination if his father retired. Another possible candidate is former U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.
Former GOP Gov. Mike Rounds previously announced his candidacy for the seat. Rounds was a state senator from 1991 to 2001 before serving two terms as governor from 2003 to 2011. After leaving office in early 2011, Rounds returned to his job as president and CEO of an insurance and real estate company based in Pierre.
The Democratic senator had surgery in 2006 to stop bleeding in his brain caused by arteriovenous malformation, a condition that causes arteries and veins in the brain to grow abnormally large, become tangled and sometimes burst. Johnson has made huge strides in recovering, but his speech is slowed and he sometimes uses a motorized scooter when he needs to get around quickly.
Johnson was elected to the U.S. House in 1986 and to the Senate in 1996. He was re-elected in 2002 and 2008. He also previously served in the Legislature.

Hachette Book Group announced Friday that no new release date has been set for Goodall's "Seeds of Hope," originally scheduled for April 2. Goodall said in a statement that she agreed to delay the book and "correct any unintentional errors."
Goodall also apologized.
"During extensive research I spoke to as many experts as possible," Goodall said in a statement released by the Jane Goodall Institute. "I also visited numerous websites dedicated to celebrating, protecting and preserving the plants of the world. This was a long and well researched book, and I am distressed to discover that some of the excellent and valuable sources were not properly cited, and I want to express my sincere apologies."
"It is important to me that the proper sources are credited, and I will be working diligently with my team to address all areas of concern," said Goodall, who has written or co-written more than 20 books.
Hachette said excerpts that appeared this month in Smithsonian magazine did not contain questionable material.
Goodall, 78, co-authored "Seeds of Hope" with Gail Hudson, who has written for Nature, Good Housekeeping and other publications. The book is being billed as a study of "the critical role that trees and plants play in our world."
Earlier this month, a Washington Post freelance reviewer alerted the paper to numerous similarities between material in "Seeds of Hope" and passages on Wikipedia and on websites for organic tea and the history of tobacco.
"My goal is to ensure that when this book is released it is not only up to the highest of standards, but also that the focus be on the crucial messages it conveys," Goodall said. "It is my hope that then the meaningful conversation can resume about the harm we are inflicting on our natural environment and how we can all act together to ensure our children and grandchildren inherit a healthy planet."

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Several off-duty federal police officers were shot dead early on Saturday in the city of Altamirano, in Mexico's western Guerrero state.
The exact number of officers killed had not yet been confirmed, an official with the federal police told Reuters.
Local media reported that between three and seven officers had been killed in the attack.
The media reports said seven officers were at a bar in the city shortly after midnight when heavily armed gunmen stormed in and opened fire without exchanging any words.
Also on Saturday, the bodies of seven unidentified men were discovered in the city of Uruapan, in Michoacan state, just north of Guerrero state.
The bodies were found sitting on plastic chairs, some with their hands and feet bound, just outside a Pepsi bottling plant, the state prosecutor's office said.
Written messages were attached to two of the bodies, warning that would-be criminals would face more violence, but they did not identify those responsible for the killings.
An estimated 70,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico in the past seven years.
President Enrique Pena Nieto, who took office in December, has vowed to quell the lawlessness and killing that have stained Mexico's image as a tourist destination and rattled investors.
