?

Last year, as soon as soccer and other outdoor sports ended, my kids got bored. And as the glorious fall days gave way to the dreary harbingers of winter, I searched high and low for affordable indoor activities for my preschoolers. I wish I had known about the Metro Arts Center, a division of Louisville Metro Parks, which offers classes for children, teens, and adults in the fine and applied arts.

Registration for fall classes has begun, so now is the time to combat weekend Wii marathons and enroll kids 8-13 in guitar or painting class or engage your creative preschooler with a stimulating art class. Pottery, cartooning, photography, screen printing, silversmithing, flute, and mandolin courses are also available. Class times and days vary, but most begin in October and end in late November or early December.

Check http://www.louisvilleky.gov/MetroParks/recreation/metroarts.htm or call (502) 937-2055 for more information.

Metro Arts Center is located at 8360 Dixie Highway, four miles south of the Watterson Expressway (1-264) and three miles north of the Gene Snyder (I-265).

Is love just chemical trickery?

the_chemistry_between_us.jpg

Kayt Sukel, contributor

In The Chemistry Between Us, neuroscientist Larry Young and journalist Brian Alexander examine the neurobiological roots of love

THERE is a reason most of us sigh into our drinks when Cole Porter croons, "What is this thing called love?" We understand his befuddlement all too well. (And let's face it: if a man about town like Porter couldn't figure out this whole love thing, what hope is there for the rest of us mere mortals?)

That's why it is encouraging to know that in the past two decades social neuroscientists have been diligently working to unravel the mysteries of love - including the phenomena of attraction, monogamy and the parent-child bond - using techniques such as brain imaging, genome-wide association studies and transgenic animal models. In The Chemistry Between Us, Larry Young, the director of Emory University's Center for Translational Social Neuroscience, and journalist Brian Alexander offer a novel take on many of those findings.

A few recent books, including my own, Dirty Minds, have chronicled love and sex-related efforts in neuroscience. One of the criticisms of many of these tomes is that they fail to take on the functional "why" questions - why monogamy exists at all, for example, or why some people are more prone to infidelity. In The Chemistry Between Us, Young and Alexander do not shy away from proposing some strong hypotheses about the ways our neurobiology shapes our behaviour when it comes to the "L" word.

Drawing on real stories as well as research, the authors take the reader on a fascinating journey through strip clubs, Romanian orphanages and labs where rodents are regularly stimulated with lubed paintbrushes. These myriad adventures provide a great context for the science - and cleverly illustrate all the ways in which love and sex can make changes to our brain chemistry.

While those who closely follow the latest neurobiological research concerning love and sex might not find many new studies in this mix, they will find a rather unique interpretation of how they all fit together.

Young, who is arguably one of most prolific researchers in the social neuroscience field, plants his flag firmly: he argues that love is truly an addiction and one to which none of us are immune. He takes a reductionist approach, focusing on molecules like dopamine, oxytocin and vasopressin, and examining how these chemicals exploit ancient neurobiological circuits.

Some may feel uncomfortable when Young and Alexander claim that sex tricks women into "babysitting" the men they love - nurturing them as they would their own infants, thanks to the goodly amounts of oxytocin released during the sex act by men hitting the cervix with their large penises and playing with their breasts. Sceptics probably won't feel much better when Young and Alexander postulate that vasopressin helps men see their female partners as simply extensions of their territory.

Still, the authors don't back down. "Many would like to believe that such notions are outdated stereotypes," they write. "They're not. We can fake it, but nature gets the last word." Not overly concerned with political correctness, Young and Alexander even go so far as to extend these hypotheses to touch on modern issues like marriage equality and single motherhood.

Yet, even if you are a wee bit sceptical about - or just weirded out by - Young and Alexander's theories on how our brain chemistry translates into love, you are still in for one wild and entertaining ride. The prose in The Chemistry Between Us is lively and fun - and provides a fresh and unapologetically pointed analysis on what understanding the neurobiological correlates of love may mean for both our relationships and our culture.

Jello wrestling highlights Rock & Tattoo Expo in Lewiston ? Living ...

LEWISTON, Maine ? The Jello-wrestling competition may have been a bit light on contestants, but it was definitely slimy on fun at this year?s Rock & Tattoo Expo.

In the end, there were no winners. There were, however, three friends cheered on by a crowd and covered from head to toe in orange Jello. Contestants shoved the slimy concoction at one another all the while trying to keep their balance in a plastic, blow-up baby pool.

?I guess we?ll just have to see what happens,? said Tina Handley, of Mexico, just minutes before getting in the ring with her friend Jennie Nisbet, of Rumford. ?The Jello?s pretty slippery, so I don?t expect to be standing much.?

The good-natured ? albeit gooey ? fun was all part of the three-day event held at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee featuring more than 40 tattoo artists from all across New England and as far away as California and Florida. Now in its third year, organizer Kris Howes ? tattoo artist and owner of INK! in Rumford ? said the event has nearly doubled each year.

In addition to tattoos and body piercings, the expo also featured a full slate of bands all day Saturday, as well as a freak show and art auction benefiting the family of Ken DeMars, of Carthage, who died suddenly at his home in July. Howes said this year?s event attracted about 1,000 people ? from the curious who came for their first tattoo or body piercing ? to those who wanted to add to their skin canvases.

?I think it?s become more accepted in the last five years,? said Howes? girlfriend, Michelle DuFault. ?It?s become more mainstreamed over the last few years.?

Nisbet said the Jello wrestling was a joke of DeMars who kept trying to talk organizers into having the event as part of the Expo. She said despite the low number of people who entered the event, the wrestling was fun and that was what the Tattoo Expo was all about.

April Pelletier, tattoo artist and co-owner of Artistic Creations in Auburn, said meeting tattoo artists from all over was one of the best parts of the event. This was her tattoo shop?s first time participating in the expo.

?Every artist here was phenomenal. The bands were amazing. And the people were just fantastic,? Pelletier said.

According to Pelletier, the event drew several new customers to the shop she owns with her husband and fellow tattoo artist, Eric, as well as many repeat customers to their business. Three new customers included sisters Joann Breen, of Skowhegan, and Michele and Beth Aldrich, both of Norridgewock, who came to the the Expo to all get the same tattoo.

Breen said all three got the word ?Sisters? permanently inked on their body with the infinity sign below it. While her sisters opted to have their tattoos placed on their feet, Breen got her tattoo on her wrist.

?We?re bonding. This is sister bonding,? said Breen with a laugh. ?I think if you get a tattoo, you should be proud of it. You shouldn?t get it just because.?

Czech police claim success in methanol case

PRAGUE (AP) ? Police have arrested two people suspected in a wave of methanol poisoning that has killed at least 25 people in the Czech Republic in the past two weeks, officials said Monday.

State prosecutor Roman Kafka said the two, from the northeastern part of the country, are suspected of producing a "brutal blend" of toxic methanol with drinking alcohol, even though they had to know it could seriously threaten the lives of those who drank it.

Authorities believe this blend has been responsible for all the deaths.

Kafka said the two were working at a plant that uses methanol as an ingredient to produce windshield washer fluid.

He said money was the key motivation. The suspects face up to life in prison if tried and convicted of endangering public health.

Methanol is mainly used for industrial purposes but unscrupulous criminal networks sometimes use it to produce liquor because it's cheap and impossible for consumers to distinguish from drinking alcohol.

Martin Cervicek, the country's top police officer, said investigators believe some 15 metric tons (16.5 U.S. tons) of methanol were originally used to make toxic alcohol and some 15,000 liters (4,000 gallons) of it is still on the market. Cervicek called on Czechs not to drink any alcohol of unknown origin.

Earlier this month, the government took the unprecedented emergency measure of banning the sale of spirits with more than 20 percent alcohol content. That move, criticized by many including President Vaclav Klaus, was followed on Thursday by a ban on the export of spirits to EU countries at the EU request.

Planning to resume spirits sales, Prime Minister Petr Necas has said any new hard liquor produced in the country needs to have a detailed certificate of origin and contain production and distribution details.

Liquors will also have new stamps and sales will be licensed.

With some of the new regulations in place, the government may lift the ban as soon as Wednesday.

"We know where the illicit alcohol came from. We know that our producers did nothing wrong," Agriculture Minister Petr Bendl told Czech public television in Brussels, where he informed his counterparts from other EU nations about the plan on Monday.

Eighteen people remain in hospital, some of them in critical condition, mostly after drinking vodka and rum laced with methanol.

Genetic findings may lead to new breast cancer treatments

By Gina Kolata

The New York Times

In findings that are fundamentally reshaping the scientific understanding of breast cancer, researchers have identified four genetically distinct types of the cancer. And within those types, they found hallmark genetic changes that are driving many cancers.

These discoveries are expected to lead to new treatments with drugs already approved for cancers in other parts of the body and new ideas for more precise treatments aimed at genetic aberrations that now have no known treatment.

The study, published online Sunday in the journal Nature, is the first comprehensive genetic analysis of breast cancer, which kills more than 35,000 women a year in the United States. The new paper and several smaller recent studies are electrifying the field.

"This is the road map for how we might cure breast cancer in the future," said Dr. Matthew Ellis of Washington University, a researcher for the study.

Researchers and patient advocates caution that it will still take years to translate the new insights into transformative new treatments. Even within the four major types of breast cancer, individual tumors appear to be driven by their own sets of genetic changes.

The study's biggest surprise involved a particularly deadly breast cancer whose tumor cells resemble basal cells of the skin and sweat glands, which are present in the deepest layer of the skin. These breast basal cells form a scaffolding for milk duct cells.

And, the researchers report, their genetic derangements make these cancers a much closer kin of ovarian cancers than of other breast cancers. The study gives a biologic reason to try routine treatments for ovarian cancer in basal-like breast cancer, the investigators said.

Two other types of breast cancer, accounting for most cases of the disease, arise from the luminal cells that line milk ducts. These cancers have proteins on their surfaces that grab estrogen, fueling their growth. Just about everyone with estrogen-fueled cancer gets the same treatment. Some do well; others do not.

The genetic analysis divided luminal cancers into two distinct subtypes. The luminal A subtype had good prognoses while luminal B did not, suggesting that perhaps patients with luminal A tumors might do well with just hormonal therapy to block estrogen from spurring their cancers while luminal B patients might do better with chemotherapy in addition to hormonal therapy.

The fourth type of breast cancer is what the researchers called HER2-enriched. Breast cancers often have extra copies of a gene, HER2, that drives their growth.

Although the drug Herceptin is approved for every breast cancer patient whose tumor makes too much HER2, the new analysis finds that not all of these tumors are alike. The HER2-enriched should respond readily to Herceptin; the other type might not.
