Inner-city women's health issues to childhood traumas

July 1, 2013 ? Researchers at Case Western Reserve University have traced chronic health problems of inner-city women to unresolved trauma from childhood abuse and neglect.

The latest findings, reported in the journal Child Abuse & Neglect, complement prior studies of other socioeconomic groups and provide further evidence linking childhood mistreatment to serious health issues as adults, said Meeyoung O. Min, assistant professor of social work at Case Western Reserve's Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse funded the study.

Min's research team set out to understand specific factors that link childhood trauma to major health problems that surface as adults. The research focused on inner-city women who participated in a series of studies examining the development of children with prenatal exposure to cocaine.

After ruling out such factors as age, education and race, the researchers found that childhood trauma affects physical health in adulthood through lifetime drug dependence, smoking, more adverse life events and greater psychological distress.

The study also found that emotional struggles and life strains -- such as financial and family-related issues -- and being re-victimized as adults, resulted in health problems among relatively young urban women with a history of substance use.

By identifying the specific cause in this link, Min said, interventions may be developed to help women avoid behaviors that lead to dependence on tobacco and illegal substances, additional trauma and other mental health issues.

Also, Min said, health care providers should be aware of childhood maltreatment as a potential contributor to health problems, especially among women in urban, low-income communities. Min urged providers to use the findings to design more personalized treatment.

Given their role in fostering the emotional and cognitive development of their children, women with childhood trauma potentially place their children at risk by exposing them to a range of adverse life events and poor capacity for parenting.

"The cycle can repeat itself," she said.

The study's participants

The study examined data from 279 women who gave birth at a large, urban publicly subsidized, teaching hospital in Cleveland between 1994 and 1996. These women were among 404 mothers with newborns recruited for a series of studies on the effects of prenatal cocaine exposure on their children's development.

About eight in 10 were African-American; about half used cocaine during pregnancy. One-fourth were married, 98 percent were of low socioeconomic status and about half were unemployed when they gave birth. They ranged in age from 31 to 54 (with an average age of 40) when their physical health was assessed, and more than a fourth had lost child custody.

Seven in 10 reported one or more childhood maltreatment: sexual abuse (32 percent), physical abuse (45 percent), emotional abuse (37 percent), emotional neglect (30 percent), and physical neglect (45 percent).

About half also reported a chronic medical condition, mainly hypertension, pulmonary diseases and pain syndromes.

The Assessment

The women provided information about their lives and children in five-hour research sessions when their children were 4, 6, 11 and 12 years old.

Information provided over time by the women included their personal accounts of the childhood trauma; responses from health surveys; diagnostic examination of addiction to alcohol, cocaine or marijuana; the kinds of everyday life stresses experienced; and psychological distress and the toll they took on their lives.

Min said the women were quite young to have such chronic health problems. The study raises concerns for their health and quality of life as they age, she said.

Case Western Reserve researchers Sonia Minnes, assistant professor of social work, Lynn Singer, deputy provost and professor of pediatric medicine, and HyunSoo Kim, a doctoral social work student, contributed to the study.

Hospitals, cancer centers now getting women drunk at 'mammogram ...

(NaturalNews) The cancer industry has apparently become so desperate to recruit new customers that it is now resorting to what can only be described as a type of medical date rape. A number of hospitals and cancer centers across the country are reportedly now holding community-driven "mammogram parties," a deceptive cancer marketing scheme that basically entails deliberately getting women tipsy or drunk on alcohol with their friends and neighbors in order to entice them into getting medically molested via mammograms.

The horrendous bait and switch tactic is taking place under the guise of "saving lives," as it is specifically designed for women who feel uncomfortable with getting mammograms, and who would otherwise avoid getting them if it were not for the added pressure of being wined and dined in a comfortable and relaxing environment. Women are being encouraged to "grab their girlfriends" for a night out at the local cancer center, during which time they take turns getting blasted with ionizing radiation in between munching down fancy cheeses and chocolate fondue, and sipping down delectable wine.

"It may be a good way to improve compliance and make having a mammogram more enjoyable," claimed Dr. Julie Silver, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, to ABC News about the disturbing mammogram party phenomenon.

It is interesting that Dr. Silver would use the word "compliance" in conjunction with mammograms, as the word is generally used in reference to someone giving an order or command to do something. This, combined with the fact that cancer centers which hold "mamm" parties are basically having to induce inebriation in order to convince many women to get mammograms, shows how slyly coercive the cancer industry is becoming in its quest to recruit new cancer patients.

With thousands of women waking up to the fact that mammograms are much more dangerous than we are all being told, and a cause of cancer in and of themselves, it is hardly surprising that the cancer industry has sunk to unconscionable new lows. And yet at the very same time, getting women drunk in order to compress their breasts for a radiation screening is technically a form of rape, or at the very least, molestation with alcohol and ambiance representing the date rape drugs of choice.

Even worse is the fact that many insurance companies are now covering the costs associated with holding mamm parties, which include not only food and beverage costs, but also all the massages and other luxurious spa resort amenities that increasingly characterize many of the gatherings. Whatever it takes to get women to subject themselves to radiation blasts is fair game, in other words, and it appears as though the specious strategy is quite a success.

"I am having fun," explained one woman attending a recent mamm party in Nevada to KTVN Channel 2 News in Reno. "Way better than the last time I came here and had [a mammogram]. This time it didn't hurt. Maybe it was the glass of wine I had before I went."

NASA sees heavy rainfall as Typhoon Rumbia heads for landfall in China

NASA sees heavy rainfall as Typhoon Rumbia heads for landfall in China [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 1-Jul-2013

Typhoon Rumbia developed from a low pressure area east of the Philippines and crossed the country from east to west before moving into the South China Sea. NASA's TRMM satellite flew over Rumbia as it nears southeastern China and identified areas of heavy rainfall in the southern quadrant of the storm.

On Sunday, June 30, NASA infrared satellite imagery revealed tightly curved bands of thunderstorms over the southern quadrant of the storm were wrapping into the northern quadrant of the low-level center. However, in the northwestern quadrant, the quadrant that will make landfall first, there was a lack of strong convection and thunderstorms. Those satellite observations held true 24 hours later.

Typhoon Rumbia was located east of Hainan Island, China in South China Sea early on July 1. It is headed for landfall today, July 1, in southeastern China, south of Hong Kong.

When NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission or TRMM satellite flew over Rumbia on July 1 at 0412 UTC (12:12 a.m. EDT) the Precipitation Radar instrument noticed some areas of heavy rainfall in bands of thunderstorms south of the center of circulation. Heavy rainfall was falling at rates of over 2 inches/50 mm per hour. TRMM imagery continued to show the strong band of thunderstorms continued wrapping around the southern quadrant of the storm and into the low-level center.

On July 1 at 1500 UTC (11 a.m. EDT), Rumbia's maximum sustained winds increased from 45 knots (52 mph) to 65 knots (74 mph/120 kph) making it a minimal typhoon. It was located near 20.3 north latitude and 110.9 east longitude, about 217 nautical miles southwest of Hong Kong. Rumbia is moving to the west-northwest at 13 knots (15 mph/24 kph).

Rumbia's western quadrant is already interacting with the land of Hainan Island, China, breaking up the band of thunderstorms in that part of the storm. Because the interaction with land is already weakening the storm the forecasters at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) expect Rumbia to continue to weaken as it heads for landfall.

JTWC expects that Rumbia may make landfall near Zhanjiang, a prefecture-level city at the southwestern end of Guangdong province. Areas that Rumbia's center are expected to pass near include Leizhou Bay and Zhanjiang Port.

Residents along southeastern China are already feeling the effects of Rumbia with tropical-storm force winds, heavy rainfall, flash flooding and very rough surf along the coasts.

By Andrew Rafferty, Staff Writer, NBC News

A Cirque du Soleil performer died Saturday after an accident during a performance of the show "Ka" at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, authorities announced Sunday.

Sarah Guyard-Guillot, 31, was pronounced dead shortly before midnight Saturday, according to the Clark County Coroner's Office. A cause of death has yet to be determined.

Audience members told the Las Vegas Sun that a performer suspended by a wire in the show?s final scene dropped a distance of nearly 50 feet into a pit below the stage.

?Initially, a lot of people in the audience thought it was part of the choreographed fight. But you could hear screaming, then groaning, and we could hear a female artist crying from the stage,? Dan Mosqueda, who was attending the show with his family, told the Sun.?

The newspaper also reported that Guyard-Guillot was a mother of two young children and had spent 22 years as an acrobatic performer.?

"I am heartbroken. I wish to extend my sincerest sympathies to the family.? We are all completely devasted with this news.? Sassoon was an artist with the original cast of K? since 2006 and has been an integral part of our Cirque du Soleil tight family. We are reminded, with great humility and respect, how extraordinary our artists are each and every night,? Cirque du Soleil said in a statement released Sunday.

Performances of "Ka" have been indefinitely suspended, the company announced.
